One minute Project

The short story we selected to recreate, A Teacher’s Rewards by Robert Phillips, had a lot of dialogue between the two main characters, Raybe and Miss Scofield, leading to the climax, where Raybe reveals his harboured resentment towards his school teacher for her bullying and abuse, and blames her for the way his life turned out. In order to cut the script down to a minute, we had to make major adjustments. The conversation between the two of them in the story was quite long and gradual, very slowly indicating that Raybe was not there for a nice visit and he had, in fact, come for revenge. In our 1-minute video, we had to shorten this 10-minute conversation to a 40-second conversation by cutting out a lot of that dialogue. So we needed a way to quickly indicate that there was a transition in mood; from friendly to suddenly dark and dangerous. We used a flashback scene as sort of a transition from “nice Raybe” to “dangerous angry prisoner Raybe”, hoping that the memory of him being hit in school would give us that insight to how Raybe must feel about her and display the change in mood. Right away we had to start wrapping up the story. Raybe yells, Miss Scofield tries asking him to leave, Raybe refuses, and then he pulls out the hammer. We cut a lot of dialogue and just replaced it with a black screen and a scream, implying what was happening (Raybe settling the score).
