The child with two names

That was My first time to Canada, I noticed that it is hard to say my name in English, so I created a new name for myself” Varick”. When I arrived in Canada, this time I don’t know why I forgot my new English name it caused a lot of confusion. Maybe because I just came to a new country and felt a little bit messed. The email what I got before told me that my homestay parents will come to the airport and bring me back into my new home in Canada. After I got off the plane, I looked around and do not find them. “they seem like do not came to the airport yet” . But in fact, they just had my English name, and  tried to find a Asian face boy called Varick.   So, the radio in the airport just said that: Varick Shen please come to the C4 please, someone is waiting for you here. But I wasn’t pay attention to that. At that time, I just want to walk around the airport and try to find something fun to waste the time. as the time passed, I almost forgot I needed to find my homestay parents. After I walked around the whole airport, I still didn’t notice they were looking for me.

I feel a little bit bored after I walked around the airport. So, I just came to the Starbuck and try to drink some coffee. Along its way, a Canadian woman asked me a question” sorry, are you Varick?” because I really forgot my English name, so I just answer that” no I am not” and showed her my passport. Then that woman left, and I just went to the Starbucks and enjoyed the coffee there. During the time, my parents sent a massage to ask me if I arrived Canada safety and do you find your homestay parents. I told them I have not find my homestay parents yet. So, they tried to text my cousin.

As the time went on, I felt a little bit bored at Starbucks, so I went to KFC because I chose a window position, so I can see the flow of people outside. I saw the woman again, she seemed to be looking for someone, and I observed that the person she asked seemed to be like an Asian or the first person to come to Canada. I wondered why she was so persistent. A person named “Varick”, is he lost? Doesn’t he know that someone is looking for him? Can’t he hear the broadcast? I even started to wonder who this person is.

About 20 minutes later, that woman found me again, she seems to want to let me confirm again if I am called Varick. Because I was a little bored at the time, plus I went through a dozen hours of flight time, I became a bit Impatient and started to say ” I was so strange that why she didn’t just call that guy and could be easier for both to find themselves.

Later, I received a email from international education: they said they had know that I have just arrived and you were looking for your homestay parent, they were looking for you also, but they could not found you at the airport. They wanted to know where I am. But I noticed that they said was dear Varick ZheYuan Shen. So, at that time, I noticed that the woman had been looking for, and the tracing broadcast that had been playing in the airport broadcast might be looking for me, and the homestay parents I had been waiting for might be her: then I realized that I was there may have been a big mistake that made many people worry about me. I began to become flustered and began to try to find the woman. She began to remember her look and clothing with memories. I even wanted to go to the airport to broadcast, but I don’t know their names. And I didn’t pay attention to the broadcast at the time, so I didn’t remember where I should go to find them. I searched for them purposelessly, hoping to meet them again. Fortunately, the broadcast of the airport at that time rang again, which made me know where I should go to find them. I quickly walked to C4. I know that I am about to find my parents. I am very excited. That woman was very impressed when she met. That makes me look stupid at that time when I remembered that thing. After they found me, they felt that this was too funny. They didn’t say anything too much, just said with a smile,” Let’s go back and see your new home.”

This incident tells me that when you step into a strange country and region, you need to remember you got the name in this country, if you forget it, there will be many unnecessary misunderstandings, and it will also waste a lot. Unnecessary time and energy. Always remember your name. especially you just came to a new region, you should remember you home name and the name you created. In this case, I think the only thing that I did right was that I was still very calm to enjoy coffee and food in a situation where I was at a loss. The next time I would remember my English name, so Will make this mistake。

The Restaurant and the taste of my Hometown

Fortune Terrace Chinese Cuisine is one of the most favorite restaurants I met in Vancouver, because this restaurant can make the taste of my hometown. That is a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. The food what they made really reminds of my mom. That is the taste of my home. As I remember, it was January, and it was close to Eastern New year. At that time, I just came to Canada two months. I missed my mom and my dad, I missed the food what they cooked, Although there was some Chinese restaurant near by my home, it tasted strange, tasted like we still need to add something into it. So I was trying a restaurant which could really cook the taste of my home. One day, I heard about this restaurant, from a friend said it is a very famous Chinese restaurant here, he assured me it was. It really like the food of home. So one day, I went to this restaurant with my friends, it is really far from my home. About one hour and a half hour later, I got here and finally saw it. It is a large restaurant with, its sign is circle of some flowers inside, as we came into it, The waiter warmly received us, which made me understand the warmth of a home, because there are so many people, so it was a little bit of noisy,

Then we learned that this restaurant is mainly cooking Asian food, making this home The restaurant was deeply loved and welcomed by other Asians. After opening the menu, I found a lot of dishes that I had in my hometown. I took the taste of these dishes very carefully, because I missed my hometown very much at that time. after waiting for about ten minutes. The dishes were ready, the dishes smelled great, the aroma of roast ducks pervaded us, the skin had a little bit of focus but the ducks were not affected. They are neatly discharged on the plate and look very delicious. They are very good at handling seafood. We only smell the savory taste of seafood instead of the rancid smell of seafood. The combination of shrimp and vegetarian dishes is very suitable, so I can’t help but taste it.

In general, the dishes are very delicious, and I will come to this restaurant often afterwards, and every time I praise it. Although its price is a bit expensive, even higher than other Asian restaurants, it can’t stop me from coming to this restaurant. Sometimes you need to wait while you are busy, you will find the right seat within 5 minutes. The services here is also a good point, the waiters will be very patient to serve you, they will not appear irritable or have other emotions, which will make you very satisfied it is my favorite restaurant in Vancouver.

The Pursuit of Happyness

In the movie The Prsuit of Happyness. Chris Gardner and Linda lived in a small apartment with their son. Chris put all the money in the family to sell the medical equipment bone density meter, but the sales situation is not good, Linda is a laundry in the local restaurant. The family’s economic situation is getting worse with the accumulation of rent and bills. Linda can’t stand this kind of day, leaving her husband and son to go to New York City to pick up a new job. Although he had a bad luck at that time, but he didn’t give up, he still try to make money whatever he can and to find a new job. Chris managed to squeeze into the Dean Witt Securities brokerage company as an unpaid intern, hoping to be officially hired by the company. In the absence of salary, Chris was heavily in debt. He and his son were expelled from the apartment and stayed in the motel. When the situation gradually improved, the deposits in the bank were all confiscated by the government because of the tax owed. The father and son had to sleep on the streets. After a few nights at the station, they queued up to Clyde Memorial Church every day, sometimes successfully grabbed the bed and sometimes failed. During this long time, he was so poor, and he still didn’t give up. And he had to pass the final interview of the company, because he had to bring him son back, so he had less time than the others, so had to work harder than the others. And he still had to think about where to live every night. That is the human condition I think, now we still do not give up when we met the fail, when we met the unhappy things, met the unlucky things. We do not give up and we still try our best to catch our own dream and standard. So at the end, he got hired. Just like what they said at the end of the movie, We can run into difficulties, but we can’t stop because of this. We can usually do something because the world is much better than we think. When we work hard to get out of trouble, happiness will come to the door. If we do not give up, we will catch our dream and get what we really want.

journal response

When I first entered this school, I could not fully understand other people’s thinking and behavior. This is what I look like. It is also the beginning of racial discrimination. Miss Caroline doesn’t like me because I know how to read it. This is her very unhappy, then, she began to let me and Atticus not read together, since then, I was discriminated against, as if I did something wrong, Walter Cunningham did not bring lunch, Miss Caroline I am willing to pay, but I have expressed the economic difficulties of Walter Cunningham. This seems to have plunged me into the highest point of discrimination.

Rube Goldberg project

I pull the trigger of the toy gun which releases elastic energy in a spring in the gun. That energy is transferred to kinetic energy in the dart which hit the poker decks. Gravitational energy causes the poker decks to fall, changing to kinetic energy in the tennis ball. The tennis ball gains more speed form the gravitational energy of the slope, and then collides with the toy car giving it kinetic energy. As the car moves, it transfers it kinetic energy into the string which raises the shelf below. Gravitational energy causes the second ball to roll until it hits the juice box. After the juice box falls over, gravity pulls the coconut water in to the paper cup.

Step A: The toy gun fires a dart that pushes over the decks of poker cards.
Step B: The poker decks fall down in order like dominos, which pushes the first tennis ball rolls over the edge.
Step C: The tennis ball rolls down the first slope and onto the next track, knocking the toy car forward and falls down.
Step D: The car pulls a string that raises the track below.
Step E: The third track raises and makes the second ball rolls over the edge and falls down along the second slope.
Step F: The second ball knocks down the juice box, which falls on its side.
Step G: The orange juice runs into the paper cup.

the facts about the BC

the history and the culture

Since the retreat of the great glaciers about 10,000 years ago, Aboriginal populations have inhabited the BC landscape.

BC’s first people may have journeyed to the region from Asia via a land bridge across the Bering Sea. As the ice receded, forests advanced and fluctuating sea levels exposed the temporary land passage linking Asia to the New World.

It is thought that BC’s coastal region became one of the most densely populated areas in North America. Prior to European contact, BC’s First Nations populations may have numbered some 300,000. The Aboriginal way of life would continue undisturbed for thousands of years, until the arrival of the British in 1778.

European Arrival

When British naval explorer Captain James Cook reached the west coast of Vancouver Island in 1778, he was eager to trade with the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people. In his wake, waves of European settlers arrived, carrying smallpox and other diseases that decimated Aboriginal populations in the late 1700s.

Nearly a century later, British agent James Douglas was searching the Pacific Coast for a new Hudson’s Bay Company headquarters. He was welcomed by the Lekwammen, whose villages dotted the shores of what is now Greater Victoria. Douglas settled in and selected a site called Camosack. A year later, in 1843, Fort Victoria was built in the area now known as Old Town, the heart of Victoria’s downtown.

Gold Rush in BC

The discovery of gold in the Fraser River and the Cariboo brought a rapid influx of prospectors, merchants, pioneers and other colourful figures to BC in the 1860s. They came from around the world, arriving from as far away as China. It was a time of rapid economic expansion; sleepy hamlets became bustling cities, and new roads, railways and steamships were constructed to carry the extra load.

Boomtowns were born and legends made, but not all experienced good fortune. The Aboriginal peoples lost most of their ancestral lands and, in 1876, First Nations populations were made subject to the federal Indian Act, which regulated every aspect of their lives.

Rapid Expansion in BC

Transportation and development marked another period of rapid economic expansion during the 1950s and 60s. Massive building projects changed the shape of the BC landscape. Expansive damming projects turned rivers into lakes; giant turbines powered dozens of new pulp mills and smelters; and the Trans Canada Highway was completed, while new bridges, railways, and BC Ferries linked land, people and technological progress.

BC’s Cultural Diversity

Today, BC’s population is wonderfully diverse. More than 40 major Aboriginal cultural groups are represented in the region. The province’s large Asian communities have made Chinese and Punjabi the most spoken languages after English. There are also sizeable German, Italian, Japanese and Russian communities – all creating a vibrant cultural mosaic in which distinct cuisine, architecture, language and arts thrive.

In 1986 the City of Vancouver celebrated its centennial, hosting the Expo ’86 World Exposition. That same year, the Sechelt Indian Band was the first Aboriginal group in BC to gain a municipal style of self-government.

In 2000, the Nisga’a Treaty came into being. The Nisga’a Nation, who has lived in the Nass area since time immemorial, negotiated with the provincial and federal governments to achieve BC’s first modern-day, constitutionally protected self-governance agreement. This marked a momentous achievement in the history of the relationship among British Columbia, Canada and First Nations.

In February and March 2010, Vancouver was the host city for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
