CBC Newsroom Tour Visit

On January 9, all our new media 10 students and some new media 11 students went to CBC together. We stayed there for about two hours. The staff there welcomed us very warmly, Michelle Eliot and Jennifer Rhyne introduced us to their work and more details about public broadcasting, and then we toured the various working departments of the CBC, such as the console and radio room, and many other functions. later we came back, I just noticed the desk they were sitting are looked like the signal of the CBC from the top-down. On this trip to CBC, I learned a lot of things that I ca n’t learn from books. For example, these journalism jobs are far less simple than I thought. They also need time and effort. We think that those staff members rarely get a response when they say hello. Maybe their work is too cumbersome or busy.

The Eddy Article – “EAL students go on holiday field trip”

International students visited Grouse Mountain and the Christmas Market

Riverside Secondary EAL students participated in an international field trip this past week in order for them to get a cultural experience amongst their studying.

Most international students showed great interest when they heard about this field trip, because they didn’t know much about Vancouver, and they also wanted to experience the scenery and characteristics of Vancouver during the holidays.

There were about 40 EAL students and some multicultural clubs students who attended this field trip, along with 3 teachers.

There are two main tourist attractions the students saw during this field trip, namely Grouse Mountain and the Vancouver Christmas Market.

At Grouse Mountain, students played in an open skating rink and tobogganing area and went to the cinema there. They then took the gondola to the top of the mountain and watched Santa’s studio, while also hiking and snowshoeing.

At the Christmas Market, they carefully watched German crafts made by hands, tasted local food and cuisine, and brought some souvenirs to take home.

They gathered at the front door of the school at 7:45am that day and returned to Riverside Secondary School at 3:10pm. This field trip cost $30 per student.

This cultural and festive Winter activity gave many international students a truly Canadian and west coast experience.  “They went up to the top of the mountain and back down to the ocean in one day and that was pretty spectacular!” said by Mrs. Joon。

Staff and students had a great time.  They would have hoped for more snow on the mountain, but the weather was beautiful at the Christmas market.  They all enjoyed spending time together outside of the classroom exploring nature and riding the bus!  Overall, this was a great field-trip!

Communication Timeline

In history, the way of communication is constantly upgrading. Before 1900, we could only send letters by writing letters and relying on others. This method was not only slow but dangerous. Then in 1900s, people invented some quicker ways. Communication, such as telegraph, allows people to pass and receive messages faster. For traditional methods of sending letters, telegraphs can be considered as an inter-generational development, because the inventors began to use electricity to transmit information, and then we will be modern. With a more convenient and quick way to communicate and deliver messages, such as wechat, we can receive information immediately, which is much faster than previous telegrams and traditional media. Therefore, the media is becoming faster and more convenient with the progress of the times, and it will not change our lives all the time.

What is new Media?

The new media uses digital technology to provide information and services to users through channels such as computer networks, wireless communication networks, satellites, and terminals such as computers, mobile phones, and digital televisions. Just like when we are in class, we can see the teacher’s class files and ppt through the computer and the network. This is also a kind of new media. New media consumption is also essential, just like we can now do online shopping, so we can save a lot of time to do other things, and we just have to wait at home. If we want to spread the new media consumer group, we should let more people access the network and use the network skillfully. Although the new media has brought us a lot of speed and convenience, we still need the support of traditional media. After all, the network is full of fake news and fraud. We need to polish our eyes to identify these false things and get real information. This will help us make better use of new media.

MEDIA RESEARCH PROJECT——WeChat

WeChat is a app of the new media. it mostly use in Asia countries.

WeChat was started inOctober 2010. In a Tencent office in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, away from the company’s Shenzhen HQ, a small team started working on a mobile chat app.It has been nine years since the beginning of WeChat. In these nine years, WeChat has undergone many changes and progress. The initial purpose of social software is of course the convenience of communication, so as to attract users to use, to achieve sales of other products. The form of this app is almost the same as Facebook.

The free business model of the Internet is essentially to acquire a huge user base for free, and then create a new value chain based on this. WeChat does not charge SMS fees. If it promotes games or recommends products in a large user base, it can easily earn more money than China Mobile’s annual SMS fee.

WeChat began as a project at Tencent Guangzhou Research and Project center in October 2010. The original version of the app was created by Zhang Xiaolong and named “Weixin” by Ma Huateng, CEO of Tencent and launched in 2011. Most of the current WeChat users are young people, and they prefer this advanced and fashionable way to communicate with friends. In most Asian countries, we call this app weixin, and in these countries in North America, it is commonly called WeChat.

WeChat also could be a book app, people could book the tickets for the movies, hotels, or the taxi. it also has its own payment called “WeChat pay”.  It is very close to “apple pay” or “google pay”, you can use it as your online wallet (Ma 2015).
