Photography Portfolio

Bio

I took photography because I’ve always been fascinated by it, and I wanted to learn how to use a camera and take great pictures. In this course I learned how to use a camera, use my surroundings, lighting, and background to my advantage to take great pictures, and I learned how to edit and format images. Personally, I really enjoy photography, especially nature photography, it’s a good excuse to go outside and have fun taking pictures of interesting things. I’m the proudest of my pictures that were taken in the studio and out in nature because the pictures I took in those settings turned out the best. What I found challenging about the course was the due dates and many assignments and projects we had and having to use photoshop extensively for a project. My favorite assignments were typology (my featured photo), studio portraits, and macro photography. The assignment I had the most difficulty with was the Avatar project because I wasn’t very familiar with the tools used in the project. In the future I will definitely be investing in a camera of my own and I will be taking pictures on vacations and of people.

Photos

Shape

This photo is from the project “shape and form”, the photo is of a bench in the foyer of riverside secondary. This is my favorite photo from this project.

Fence

This photo was part of the “TechZone” project, and it was taken nearby riverside secondary of a fence. I really like this photo because of how clear the fence chains ended up appearing as well as the background is blurry but still able to tell what it is.

Natural Light Portrait

This photo was a part of the natural light portrait project and was taken within riverside secondary. I quite like this photo because of the contrast between the shade and light on the subject’s face. Something I think I could’ve done better on this photo is that I could’ve tried to get less exposure on the side of the subject’s face where the sun is hitting.

Silhouette

This photo was part of the studio portraits project, and it was taken in the studio at riverside secondary. I really like this picture because I had to get creative when setting up for this picture and I actually didn’t know how to take a silhouette photo prior to figuring it out.

Thoughts

This photo was also part of the studio portraits project. This photo is my favorite from this project because the setting, props, pose, lighting and everything was just perfect in this photo.

Halo

This photo was part of the light painting project, It was taken in the riverside studio. I really like this photo because the halo effect created by a light came out very well as well as the praying hands.

Spikey

This photo was part of the “pick 3” project and it was taken nearby riverside secondary, this photo was taken with a macro lens. Something I found difficulty with taking this photo was the amount of time it took to get the camera to focus and to get the correct angle on the subject.

Downstream

This photo was also part of the “pick 3” project and was taken at the poco river. This photo is different than what I usually take because there is a lot going on in this photo compared to my other photos, there is the river, the rocks, the grass, the bushes, the trees, and even the powerlines in the back and top of the photo, I think that all these different elements of the photo really bring it together and isolate it from the other photos I’ve chosen.

Spoken Word Video – Be Yourself

Here is my Spoken Word in both video and written formats on the topic of body dysmorphia. I used DaVinci Resolve to create my video.

 Be Yourself

So, do you want to change how you look, or do you really want to change how you feel?

This is a common misconception that everyone has, and it is called “body dysmorphia”.

Why do you want to change how you look?

Are you too skinny?

Are you too fat?

Are you too ugly?

But what is considered good,

what is considered normal?

What is the recipe for perfection?

Well, the answer is, normal doesn’t exist.

Nothing defines normal other than what people perceive to be normal.

That could be having your hair a certain way,

dressing a certain way, (pause)*

looking a certain way.

Why do we have to feel the need to mold ourselves

The perfect recipe is a social construct of society, product of vanity

The ingredients written often for profit:

The right supplements?

The right skin care products?

The right clothes?

The truth is that

everyone should be able to be how they are and be how they want.

You are the canvas, the paint, and the brush

People will start to workout to get fitter, or look better, or get stronger.

But how do we know what is considered fitter:

better, or stronger?

All we know is what we see on social media, social media shows you the genetic freaks,

the “best looking”, the strongest of the strong.

These people that we see are part of the top 0.00001%

that have the best lighting, the best angles, the best show of themselves on their best day

Our perception of reality is skewed because of social media,

it doesn’t matter what the circumstances are, whether someone has altered their face with plastic surgery, altered their body with steroids and used fake weights to appear stronger.

All you see is what’s right in front of you.

Who really sets the standards?

The people on social media?

Nobody should set the standards for you, you are your best self, who cares how other people look, don’t let other people stop you.

Who is the one that judges if you are a good-looking person?

What determines it?

Well, its all down to personal preference, everyone views other people in different ways.

They like certain features better than others.

Its impossible to cater to everyone, that’s why you should only do what makes you feel good.

But I want to fit in with everyone, I want to be like everyone else, I want to be accepted.

I want to fit in.

Most people probably don’t even know themselves as well as they know their favourite influencer.

What is your personality like?

Why do you want to fit in?

Who are you?

Be yourself

Week 9 blog post

How to plot coordinates on a plane.

(3,-4)

Step 1:

Know what each quadrant represents.

Step 2:

Know what each number on a coordinate represents.

The first number being 3 is always on the x axis and the second number being -4 is always on the y axis.

Step 3:

Plot the coordinates.

For the x coordinate you would go 3 right on the axis and then 4 down because its negative.

The black dot represents the coordinate.

Indigenous Podcast – “Taken Away” – Zak & Kai

Taken Away – Ep. 1 Francis Bent – Zak & Kai
We have chose  to do our Indigenous Podcast Project on “Francis Bent”, an indigenous man who was taken away from his family at a very young age and experienced sad and terrible things at his stay in the residential school system. For this project we have used different techniques for making media, such as using image and audio editing softwares, and proper writing styles and formatting. The information collected is from the Legacy of Hope Foundation, a website to share indigenous stories and culture, and to remember what has happened in the past. I learned many things about residential schools during this podcast-making experience, and I’m glad my knowledge has expanded and I am more aware of the horrors seen within these schools.

Currents from the Kitchen

Results

Potato –  0.4 volts

Apple – 0.3 volts

Lemon – 0.3 volts

For the lemon we found that putting it upside down was a more effective way of measuring the voltage.

Additional observations

We found that putting the nail and the copper strip closer together made the measurements more effective in each fruit/vegetable.

Explanations

The potato ended up having the highest voltage which was surprising because I expected the lemon to have the highest voltage, the lemon has the most electrolytes, but the potato ended up having the highest voltage. The reasoning towards why the potato had the highest voltage is unknown.

Questions

What is causing the flow of electrons?

The closed circuit with the fruit creating the voltage causes the flow of electrons.

What are independent, dependent, and controlled variables in this experiment?

Measuring the voltage, the fruit and the copper strip and the nail.

How can we modify our experiment to improve our results?

Use a bigger variety of fruits and vegetables.

What are sources of error or uncertainty in our experiment?

If the ripeness of the fruit and vegetables were different it could’ve impacted the outcome.

How can I use this in my every day life?

If I lived in a rural area and we had a lot of fruit and no power we could use this experiment for power.

Fictional Science Safety Story

Map of room

Story

It was around 12:30pm, we were just ready for a lab to see how long it takes to boil cold water and room temperature water to see which one boils the fastest. We were using 2 250ml beakers 1 full of cold water and the other filled with room temperature water, a Bunsen burner for heating up the water, a tripod stand for putting the beakers above the flame, forceps to hold the beaker, a wire rack so that the glass doesn’t get full exposure to the heat and a sparker to light the Bunsen burner. I started the lab by filling up the beakers with water, then I put the Bunsen burner down next to the gas valve and connected it, I wasn’t really sure how to connect it to the gas valve but I’m pretty sure I got it. After that I placed the tripod over the Bunsen burner with the wire rack on top, then I placed the first beaker which is full of cold water on top of the wire rack.

I commenced with lighting the Bunsen burner with the sparker after turning the gas valve half way as the teacher instructed. I then waited for the water to boil while timing it and then I wrote down the time after it boiled. While I was taking the beaker off the rack I noticed that there was a bottle of acetone with the lid off sitting on the counter near the Bunsen burner and it seems to have the symbols that mean corrosive and flammable, while I took the time to read the symbols on the acetone I loosened up on the boiling water clenched in the forceps and I dropped it on the table which cut and burnt my hand so I immediately put my hand under cold water and then told the teacher, but while I went over to tell the teacher I hadn’t realized that the Bunsen burner got knocked over and it ripped the connecter to the gas valve out and the acetone also fell over which was lit on fire. The whole table was on fire and that wasn’t the worst thing to happen, the gas valve wasn’t turned off so the gas slowly filling up the room ignited and everyone was burnt to a crisp.

Asexual Reproduction Superheroes

Overview

Spore formation is the form of asexual reproduction I’ve chosen for my superhero. Spore formation is where a single celled organism creates a new organism within itself when it becomes weak or in danger. The spores are created by the single celled organism but only one spore can be created per cell, the spores also have much resistance to certain weather conditions or environments.

Superpowers

Fungus Man is able to always get out of any situation by exploding its head and releasing spores, the spores can then rest until the coast is clear then, they can grow through stages of mitosis, they become gametophytes, then they become gametes, and then fuse into zygotes, then they go back to a fully grown organism which carries all the spores ready to reproduce once again. This is like cloning but better because the spores have invincibility during their resting stages.

Things I could’ve put on the picture

In the picture I would’ve liked to show the spores bursting out of the sporangia but Fungus Man doesn’t need to do that unless he’s in danger. I would’ve also liked to add the cycle of how a spore reproduces but I provided a description on that. The most I could do was show the neutral state of Fungus Man which is what he would want to be in all the time.
