- Nationalism – an intense loyalty toward and desire to preserve one’s own cultural identity, language, and traditions. The Austrian-Hungarian empire controlled several Slavic nations that wanted independence and rebelled against Austrian rule. Some Bosnian Serbs formed the Black Hand, a group willing to fight for their nationalistic goals. To Austro-Hungarian imperialists, Serbian nationalism was a deadly idea that had to be crushed at all costs.
- Imperialism – Powerful countries practiced imperialism by establishing colonies all over the world to create empires, At the beginning of the 20th century, Germany was struggling to establish itself as an imperial power. - a. The perspective is probably from the US or Canada because they are not in the cartoon even though they participated in the war, also it is in English and was published in a Canadian newspaper.

What was Germany and Austria’s alliance called? Why was it created?
Why did Britain join the war?
For 7a, you need to use what’s in the image to discuss the perspective, not what’s not in it. Think about who is shown to be the victim.
The irony lies in the idea that this chain of friendship led to war, not peace.
