16-year old Global Climate Activist

“Small, shy, survivor of crippling depression, Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish girl skipping school to shame the world into addressing climate change, drew a parade of fans on Friday in February on a frozen square in Stockholm.” The writer described. The beginning sentence grabbed my attention. 16-year old Greta is a widely supported climate activist. I was intrigued by the fact that Greta is very similar to me or many other teenage girls. Greta is reaching into the world with her speeches and principles. Short stories such as There Will Come Soft Rains relate to the universal issue of inaction with protecting the environment. In Geography, we discussed environmental ethics, and why and how we should create an ethic of care towards the environment. Ethics of care requires a particular relationship, a kind of labour and opposing justice. Greta proves certain qualities of an environment-caring person. The writer reveals that Greta skips school for protests, I respect her devotion and resolution towards addressing climate change. The article conveyed contrasts to create such a character for Greta in which she is characterized “small, shy” yet “Wry. Blunt. Sometimes sarcastic. The opposite of sweet.” I felt a message was portrayed within explaining the inefficient actions of adults lead to 16-year olds to go as far as to skipping school for protests. I believe the article established a kind of confidence for young individuals to express their voices, a 16-year old “invisible” girl in the back of the class can become a global activist. “All my life I’ve been invisible, the invisible girl in the back who doesn’t say anything,” she said. “From one day to another, people listen to me. That’s a weird contrast. It’s hard.” The author quotes.
