Notes for agriculteral science:

some innovations brought from the Americas

most famous practice: companion planting

companion farming: they grew plants together like corn, beans, and squash

Lord Townshend (named Turnip Townshend) made a crop rotation system and a new way to feed livestock

he found out that if he roatated the crops from field to field, all fields could be used every year.

-that increased crop growth, and the growth of cheap fodder

fodder- plants to feed animals

fodder allowed him to increase his herds

different vegetables would allow diffferent nutrients to be released in the soil (like turnips and clover). this replenished the soil

Lord Townshed make root vegetables more popular

cycle was made up of wheat, turnips, oats or barley and clover

Notes on seed drill:

farmers used to plant seeds by broadcasting

-seeds were planted by throwing them around the field by hand. This was bad because the seeds were not distributed evenly and seeds were wasted

seed drill is a planting machine created by Jethro Tull

it was pulled by horses and planted seeds in rows

this method was faster and less wasteful

seeds were less likely to be eaten by birds or animals

easier to harvest

reduced labour
