4 Similarities between Jack Merridew and Severus Snape

1. Appearance

Jack and Snape share the common appearance of evil. They both have long, greasy hair, although Jack’s is red and Snape’s is black. They share the same tall, thin, and bony body type. Snape and Jack both have very pale skin. Their ugly faces contribute to their evil persona, and their long noses give off a witch-like visage. Fear and distress are present within strangers who come in contact Snape and Jack for the first time.

2. Obsessive

Jack is completely and utterly obsessed with hunting and killing. All he can think about is spilling the blood of pigs and animals. This savage urge to kill may be fuelled by traumatizing events in Jack’s past. The boys on the island were being evacuated out of England because of the war, which may have gotten to Jack’s head. Jack’s obsession with hunting is almost on the same level as Snape’s obsession with terrorizing Harry. Snape wants Harry to suffer as much as possible during his years at Hogwarts. Snape’s hatred towards Harry is fuelled by his poor experiences with Harry’s father, who bullied Snape when they were kids.

3. Unreasonable

Snape and Jack share a stubborn, mule-like personality that disables them from using reasoning and logic to make correct decisions. Once they set their mind on a certain goal, nothing will get in their way no matter what. This trait can be positive or negative depending on the situation. It can be positive when they are working towards a helpful goal, but it can be negative if they are doing evil deeds and no one can stop them.

4. Intelligent

Although they may not use their brains for good, both characters demonstrate high level intelligence in many situations. Snape was playing as a triple agent during his years at Hogwarts which would require insane amounts of patience and skill. He works at Hogwarts, pretending to be working for Voldemort, while secretly actually working for Dumbledore. In Lord of the Flies, Jack uses his evil personality to control others. He also utilizes very advanced hunting techniques to catch the pigs, hunting techniques that any old thickheaded boy wouldn’t be able to come up with.
