“Lord of the Flies” – Island Description

This is the post that has a four quotes. The quotes are describing the important locations in Lord of the Flies.

  1. Scar: “All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat” (Golding 6).
  2. The coral reef: “the coral reef and the few stunted palms that clung to the more elevated parts would float up into the sky” (Golding 81).
  3. Beach: “The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in the air” (Golding 10).
  4. Platform: “Ralph sat on a fallen trunk, his left side to the sun. On his right were most of the choir; on his left the larger boys who had not known each other before the evacuation; before him small children squatted in the grass” (Golding 43).
  5. Site where Ralph and Piggy find the conch: “little breezes crept over the polished waters beneath the haze of heat. When these breezes reached the platform the palm fronds would whisper, so that spots of blurred sunlight slid over their bodies or moved like bright, winged things in the shade” (Golding 17-18).
  6. Island: “This an island. At least I think it’s an island. That’s a reef out in the sea” (Golding 7).
  7. Lagoon: “Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lake—blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple” (Golding 10).
  8. Sea: “That is a reef out in the sea” (Golding 2).
  9. Shape: “It was roughly boat-shaped: humped near this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore” (Golding 38).
  10.  Mountain: “…his eyes and followed the jagged outline of the crags up toward the mountain. This part of the beach was nearer the mountain than any other that they had seen” (Golding 33).
