Week#, Date, Title

Minimum of 3 photos. Additional media like video or audio is optional.

Core competency:

Vocabulary word: Vocabulary word that pertains to the work done in this subject this week, including a definition, and detail of how it pertains to the work done.

Reflection that includes a strength, stretch and goal in relation to one of the core competencies.

Week#1, January 1 2024, First week settling.

Core competency: Creative Thinking, developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Space/Perspective. Where in art, it reference to the technique, creating an illusion of 3-dimensional object that has the effects of messing with your head. It can make 3-dimensional objects on a  2-dimensional surface look natural and realistic way. space is used to make depth in the 2-dmmensial area where it can be organized.

This week I transferred from chemistry 11 to studio arts 3D 12. I think changing my courses around was a strength on my part, because my second semester is very course heavy, and chemistry would have been a struggle with Math, English, and Spanish on top of it. A stretch I had was getting in the class late, which means I wasn’t introduced to everyone’s names and therefore have a disadvantage for getting to know peoples names. Today in class, I was introduced to Elements and Principles of art. We went through video showing us all different kinds of elements. My favorite element we watched today would have had to be Space/perspective. My goal next week is to be able to use the elements and principles of art in my actual assignment in this art class.

Week#2, January 8 2024, Elements of Principles

Core competency: Communication, connect and engage with others.

Vocabulary word: Line. Line is the path of a point moving through space. A line can have different properties, such as length, width, tone, texture, direction, and curvature. I used line this week by making a 3-D sculpture that had lines and rhythm/movement in it.

This week I we have been working on the element of principles development strategies. A strength I had this week was completing my Image Development Strategies Worksheet and on freedom Friday, working on my gift for my dads birthday. A stretch I had to overcome this week was getting done the Image Development Strategies Worksheet because I  had a hard time find some magazine cutouts to fill the spaces. To achieve this goal, I added for some advice and help to see if I was on the right track or not. My goal for next week is to start on the life on land project or some sort of paper mâché project and to keep working on my dads bday present. While continuing on my dads project, I can connect with others to ask for some advice when needed.

Life on Land – Research (10/ 11/ 12) 3D Art

Purpose:
Why make this project?

I knew I needed to make some kind of paper Mache project, so I just chose to look on the internet especially Pinterest for some ideas on what to make. There were lots of cool pieces of art work that i could have gotten inspired by but this fish I came across really spoke to me. I asked this alternate assignment off of a fish. A plain Jain fish that’s named Nemo. He is going to be very cool when I have completed him.

-what ideas inspires you?

By looking at other art work thats have been done, some type of paper Mache animal I was thinking of doing. I made a paper Mache Snail last semester, so I knew I could make another “pinata” just without all the extra steps for the actual paper Mache pinata project.
What is the history?
History behind Paper mache:

Paper mache, also known as papier-mâché (French for “chewed paper”), has a rich history dating back centuries. Its origins can be traced to China, where it was developed during the Han Dynasty (around 202 BCE – 220 CE). Chinese artisans created intricate objects using a mixture of paper pulp, water, and glue made from rice flour or starch. This technique was initially used to create practical items such as helmets, armor, and even small boats.

History behind goldfishes:
Goldfish were first domesticated in China over a millennium ago before making their way to Japan by the late 16th century. Subsequently, they journeyed to Europe and other regions as prized pets and decorative additions to aquaria and fountains, often passing through Macao. The earliest known depiction of a goldfish in England dates back to 1711 and was rendered by the botanist James Petiver.

-What other artists have worked with this idea in the past
Joel Hernandez, now 39, began crafting papier-mâché at 8, after his family moved to rural Indiana from Mexico and couldn’t find piñatas. This inspired him to make vibrant masks, feeling a lack of representation for gay individuals. Using recycled newspaper and a flour-water-salt paste, he creates colorful face coverings. His masks, showcased in galleries like La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles, are available online.

How can I move this idea forward?

Just creating the fish is one thing, but doing some research on it and expanding your learning can be a very educational experience and make your learning more memorable.

-How can my work respect the past, build on ideas, or reach in to new territory.
My work can respect the past because creating a art piece representing the fish is a way of honoring the animal. Building on ideas can be an important step because not only creating something and then you finish it, you can build on that finished project and make it better. This is a new experience for me because I’ve never made a paper Mache fish before so figuring out the details was an interesting part of making Nemo.

Week#3, February 15 2024, Paper Mache creation (Alternation from Life on Land)

Core competency: Critical Thinking, analyze and critique

Vocabulary word: Shape/Form. Form and shape can be used to describe objects in space. Form refers to 3 dimensional objects, while shape refers to 2 dimensional objects.

This week I have been working on my alternate project of the “Life on Land Pinata” my Goldfish sculpture. It will be kind of like a pinata when I’m with it, it just doesn’t have the same amount of requirements that the actual assignment has. I will be creating a Goldfish made out of paper mache and it would be kind of like a piñata just without the goodies inside. A strength I had this week was being able to analyze my sculpture and see that I made a mistake when hot gluing some pieces together. A stretch I had to overcome this week was realizing I made a mistake and taking the time to fix it, before I kept building onto that mistake. Critique my flaws and make sure I don’t make stupid mistakes again. My Goal for next week it to be done the constructing part of my creature and to start on the paper mache part of it.

Inquiry Term-Long Project

Make a journal entry on your page where you cover the sections highlighted in blue.  This is your proposal, and will count as the PURPOSE of your project. This is a PORTFOLIO item, that will showcase your learning.

What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?

  • I would be making a Can of Sardines made by hand about the same size as an actual can of fish. I saw this idea when browsing on Pinterest and I thought it was really cute. My hope for the end results of the project should look something like these photos shown below.
What do you need to get started?
  • I want to make this project because I saw it on Pinterest one day and fell in love with it. I also saw someone on TikTok try to make one of these and saw the process of how to make it. By watching that video I can learn from her mistake and have some inspiration on how I’m going to create my version of this art piece. The purpose of my project is to be expose to different techniques of clay, such as using molds, and using underglaze to write words and make the fish icon.
How will you begin the project?
  • A challenge I may face would be cracking when attaching the base and the walls together. If I don’t do it properly the first time it will dry and then its hard to add clay and slip onto of a different texture of clay, even if you wet the clay. Keeping the clay moist till I am done with the can of Sardines.

Inquiry Term-Long Project (Part 2)

Make a journal entry on your page where you cover the sections highlighted in blue.  This is your proposal, and will count as the PURPOSE of your project. This is a PORTFOLIO item, that will showcase your learning.

What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?

  • I actually made a jewelry holder that looks like a swimming pool. I saw this idea when browsing on Pinterest and I thought it was really cute and a cool art project. My hope for the end results of the project should have looked like the photo I was referencing but it kinda turned out a bit differently.

What do you need to get started?
  • I want to make this project because I saw it on Pinterest one day and fell in love with it. The purpose of my project is to be expose to different techniques of clay, such as using molds, and using underglaze to create the pool design outlines on the bottom of the pool. Using underglaze and acrylic paint together.
How will you begin the project?
  • A challenge I may face would be cracking when attaching the base and the walls together. If I don’t do it properly the first time it will dry and then its hard to add clay and slip onto of a different texture of clay, even if you wet the clay. Keeping the clay moist till I am done with the design and detail in this project

Week#4, February 22 2024, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Critical Thinking, Question and Investigate.

Vocabulary word: Emphasis.  Emphasis is art refers to the special importance, significance, or prominence given to a particular idea, word, phrase, or element within a communication, such as spoken or written language, in order to highlight or draw attention to it.

This week for the 3 days we were at school I got a lot of progress done on my Goldfish. The structure of the body is basically completed and next week I will most likely start on the paper mache part of it. Ms. Tee had planned an activity to do with a card and some playdough. We needed to create a sculpture out of playdough that corresponded with the animal on the card that you picked. A strength I had this week was being able to question my artwork and make some improvements that needed to be made. I am so excited that I got the whole structure of the fish done and now I can move on to the paper mache part. Such as fixing some of the shapes that the fins were, and the overall shape of the fish. A stretch I had to overcome this week was investigate the problem that I was making, and fixing it so it wouldn’t cause further destruction. My goal for next week is to obviously continue doing the paper mache part and be done it at the end of next week.

Week#5, February 29 2024, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Personal Awareness and Responsibility, Self-determination

Vocabulary word: Exaggeration. In art this word referrers to the emphasis or effect some particular part has on the project. It is a form that is specifically formed to be emphasized. On my nemo the puckered lips are exaggerated to represents a gold fish doing “Gulp gulp gulp”

Reflection that includes a strength, stretch and goal in relation to one of the core competencies.

This week was a very successful week. I was Very VERY determined to get done of my Nemo done. I finished up all the gross paper mache part and now Taryn is on the paper clay part. Ella was oh so kind into helping me make some, because I have never made that type of material before. It was kind of gross the process. I almost got the whole animal covered in less than an hour but then Taryn got kicked out. A strength I had was being persistent and getting some “shit” done. Parden my French. I love being ahead and just overall get to buckle down and do my art. No distractions this semester. Biology or Rosy being a Tard. A stretch I had to overcome this week was to manage my time, when some of the class we got were only 10 minutes of work time. A goal for next week would be to finally start my Inquiry long term project and to start joint compound on Nemo.

Week#6, March 7, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Critical Thinking, Develop and Design

Vocabulary word: Joint compound. Its a product to make your work look finished and ready to paint. Its also known as a mud or mixture to add volume on your project. It is a creamy, toothpaste-like material that is used in conjunction, but also serves as glue, adhesive, and a filler for many surfaces… especially art 😉

This week I worked on my “life on land project” which is really my paper mache creation. Last week I basically completed the whole joint compound process in one day. This week I added a second layer then I started to develop My basic concept of a Goldfish. A strength I had this week was asking for some advice to enhance my learning and up my art game.  A stretch i could work on is, doing all these steps for my creature faster. I feel that I take a long time to do one step and I don’t like feeling behind. A goal i would like to complete would be to finish Ella’s birthday present by spring break, start painting next week and hopefully complete the clay part of my inquiry project.

Week#7, March 14, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Creative Thinking, Developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Texture. Texture in art and composition is the  visual and tactile surface characteristics that are added to a work of art. It refers to the physical appearance or feel of an object, and can be seen through bumps, ridges, grooves and other physical details.

This week I worked on my “life on land project” which is really my paper mache creation. This week has been pretty fast pace and I feel like I’m running out of time. Its taking way too long to figure out scales on nemo and trying to re-do them. I have re-done the scales about 10 times. After this project I don’t want to see a fish again in my life. When I started over and over again on  the scales, I had to develop some ideas on how I could make scales look realistic is a fast manner. A strength I had this week was asking for some opinion on how I could accomplish these scales. A stretch I could work on is trying to get as much as I can in class. Figuring out these obstacles ahead and then trying them right away, not wasting anytime. A goal I would like to complete would be to finish the scales tomorrow and start painting my Nemo.

P.s. I accidentally broke Ella’s gift and now its toasted. I started to make some bracelets so many Ill do that for my inquiry project as well as the can of sardines which I will start after the break.

Week#8, April 4, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Communication, collaborate a to plan, carry out, and review constructions and activates

Vocabulary word: Value. In art this can be represented in the lightness and darkness of colors or tones, which can create contrast, depth, and form in an artwork.

This week I worked on my “Life on land Project” which is really my paper Mache creation. Yes I did copy this same sentence from the previous entry but we will move past that. We have been doing morning warm ups such as finding a piece of art work and coming up with interesting questions for it, and analyzing it like a real artist would. I basically finished up the whole painting process this week. I went out my comfort zone and took some risks that I would normally not take. By communicating my ideas I can review my ideas and work through the issues that may come up. A strength I had this week would be finishing my artist statement and my whole paper mache alternate creation.  A stretch that I could over come would be using those communication skills I have to talk with someone and brain storm a plan on how I could paint this part, and how I could tie this color in with the rest of the colors. A goal for next week would to get started on the new project that will be introduced to us this week and start on a new or continue a inquiry project.

Week#9, April 11, Paper Mache Creation

Core competency: Critical Thinking, Question and Investigate.

Vocabulary word: Color. Color is the element of the art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye. In art design, color has many attributes which are primarily subjective. Color theory categorizes colors into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

This week I Finished on my “Life on land Project” which is really my paper Mache creation. Yes yes. This is very Very similar to the same sentence in the previously journal entry but I don’t care. It gets the point across. Tehehe. This week has been going slow but getting the stuff done and the projects in. I finished up my creature last week so this week I’m taking finial pictures and handing in some things. A strength I had recently was starting my brush slug project on Friday last week and completed the whole clay process. I stayed till 7:30pm!!! I know, I know, I’m very dedicated to my work. A stretch though, that I had to over come was finding CRACKS in my clay and some pieces BREAKING OFF!!! I was so mad and frustrated because it took my 5 HOURS TO DO!!!! I needed to question and investigate what had caused this. Maybe I didnt score and slip properly but still and then the first thing possible happened. Something on the wall fell and landed on my project causing the whole thing to break. I though I was going to have a mental break down and start crying. I didnt though and I grabbed the teacher to come assist my needs. We did fix it eventually but still. I was so mad. A goal for next week is to start the Decoration because Taryn wants that 100% A+++.

Life on Land PRODUCT (Pinata)

Gold Fish

April 3, 2024

Paper Mache and Acrylic Paint

Taryn Allan

This is my alternate art inquiry project into paper mache. I chose the gold fish because they’re super cute. The goldfish’s name is Nemo. Yes, Nemo! The reason why its name is Nemo is because he is related to Marlin but not his direct son, a distant cousin.

Some issues I had while making Nemo were the fish scales. They just did not work out the first time and apparently looked like a “disease”.  In the end Taryn figured it out and I would say it looks pretty good. This lovely creature was made out of paper mache, joint compound, acrylic paint and a lot of love.

Week#10, April 18, Brush Slugs

Core competency: Creative Thinking, developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Fragmentation. Fragmentation is a artist technique that involves breaking up the image of ideas into parts and recombining them in new ways. It can be used to expose what lies beneath or highlight the value of each part.

This week I started my 2nd attempt on my brush slugs project. This week is going to be very stressful because I only have 3 days to do stuff because I am missing half the week this week and half the week next week so I need to move quickly and fast. A strength I had recently was completing the clay process of the brush slug and finishing up my sketching for painting my brush slug. I also finished the sketches for the Decoration which I will be started next week. A stretch I had this week was trying to get as many things as I could done because of the amount of school I was going to be missing. A goal for next week is to complete the brush slug painting up and start my Decoration and puppet sketches. I need to use my Creative Thinking to develop ideas for what type of puppet I want to create and how I can achieve this.

Week#11, April 25, Brush Slugs

Core competency: Creative Thinking, developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Exaggeration. Exaggeration in art referrers to the emphasis or effect of some particular part in the project. It is a form that is specifically formed to be emphasized. On my brush slug it would be the sand bank island with the seaweed, rock and coral pieces.

This week I finished painting my brush slug and I was so excited to complete it because it has taken way too long. This week is still really stressful because I have so much stuff to do still for art class and my other classes. A strength I had recently was completing the painting process of the brush slug and finishing starting my sketches for the other projects. A stretch I had this week was trying to get as many things as I could done because of the amount of school I was going to be missing. A goal for next week is to start my decoration and sketches for my puppet. I need to use my Creative Thinking to develop ideas for what type of puppet I want to create and how I can achieve this.

Week#12, May 2, Wall Decoration

Core competency: Personal Awareness and Responsibility, Self-determination

Vocabulary word: Balance: Balance in art refers to how elements of art relate to each other within the composition in terms of their visual weight to create visual symmetry. Its a way for the human eye to seek stability in images which is appealing to our eyes and we are attracted  to symmetrical faces and objects.

This week I finished up my brush slug by glossing it. I took final pictures of it and handed it in to the teams project. I got 20/20 and I’m very proud of the grade. I almost cried when I my first attempt broke and I was going to give up, but I carried through and made my original design better. I also started my Wall Decoration and I think I picked the most complicated idea I had but the more complicated it is, the more it challenges me. I finished the design on Wednesday and it slowly dried so that it could go in the kiln and be bisque fire.  A strength I had this week was handing in a lot of my over due assignments. I  hand many assignments that were overdue because I was away, so getting some of those handed in relieved a little bit of my stress. A stretch I had this week was getting stuff done, and getting it done fast. I need to complete many thing that it takes self-determination and will power to continue on and work past school hours to get stuff done. I don’t know how I would be able to hand stuff in without staying after school to work on things. A goal for next week is to complete the whole wall decoration project and finally start my puppet.

Week#13, May 9, Wall Decoration and Puppet

Core competency: Personal Awareness and Responsibility, Self-determination

Vocabulary word: Unity: Unity is a principle of art and design. It refers to how all the components of a painting come together to appear unified. In this art work I may have not used it at all, properly, or not enough, but we did talk about it for a long time about the concept of it.

This week I finished up my Decal by painting and glossing it. I took final pictures of it and handed it in to the teams project. I haven’t gotten my grade back for it yet, but I hope its 95% and above. I started the process of re-doing my sketches for my puppet because when I attempted to do the clay part the first time I failed tremendously. I decided to do the boy instead of the octopus cause, why not. Try something different. A strength I had this week was finishing the painting and glossing process of my wall decal and making a mothers day gift for my mother. Obviously. NOT FOR ROSY. A stretch I had this week was getting more stuff done like usual. I need to complete many thing that it takes self-determination and will power to continue on and work past school hours to get stuff done. If i wasn’t able to stay after school I don’t know how I would be able to hand stuff in. A goal for next week is to finally start the actual clay part for my puppet.

Week#14, May 16, Odd ball projects

Core competency: Positive Personal and Cultural Identity, Personal values and choices

Vocabulary word: Proportion scale. Proportion scale in art refers to the relationships between the size and location of different elements in an artwork. Proportion refers to the dimensions of the elements, while scale refers to the size of the artwork or the parts of a composition, Proportion and scale can affect the overall harmony, meaning, or expressiveness of an artwork. We talked about Proportion scale in art today while critiquing a randoms guys drawing on the internet.

This week I worked on glazing my swimming pool and starting my puppet for the second time. On Monday it was really slow and I had a hard time to get motivated because Ms. Tee wasn’t here. Sad face emoji. HAHAHAHA. Get it emoji, cause Yaya Tee LOVES emojis. Anywhos on Monday I glazed my pool and on Tuesday Taryn Studied for her math test….. On Wednesday she learned about analyzing art work and also finished up the glazing on the pool. She also loaded the Kiln up. How helpful. On Thursday we did some more analyzing of some art work and I also started to trim my plate that I made in art club on Wednesday.  On Friday I mostly studied for my Spanish test that I had later that day. I was stressing about it because I had other homework to do so the studying never got done. A strength I had this week was overcoming my fear of making the puppet and just doing it. A stretch I had this week was trying to work on others things when something isn’t available to do, like  if my puppet head was in the kiln, competing the clothing sketches for it. By making personal decisions if I want to work on someone that day comes down to me. If I don’t work on something that day that consequence will set me back further. A goal for next week is to continue working on my puppet and completing other little assignments as well.

Week#15, May 23, Puppet

Core competency: Positive Personal and Cultural Identity, Personal values and choices

Vocabulary word: Slip. Slip is a liquid mixture of clay and water that is used in ceramics to decorate, join, or smooth the surface of pottery. It is essentially a form of liquid clay that can be applied to pottery in various ways to create unique designs and textures. Slip is an essential component in the world of ceramics and plays a crucial role in the creation of beautiful and functional pottery pieces.

This week is a shortened which makes me very happy. I was solely focus on my puppet this week. I went though highs and lows but mostly lows with my puppet. Its a love hate relationship with it. Yes. I said it instead of he/she. Once its an actual puppet it can have a pronoun, but for now its an “it”.  On Monday there was no school, so Taryn wasn’t at school. On Tuesday Taryn did a bit of floating and worked on her spoken word. Tuesday after school though, I worked on the puppet head. I wedged the clay, rolled it out and started to shape it around the armature. I worked on the facial features but it looked very creepy by the end of it. On Wednesday Taryn worked on destroying the puppet because she changed her mind like four times. On Wednesday after school, she worked in rolling out the clay again and  re-doing the whole bass part of the puppet head. On Thursday she added more detail to the octopus and did another hamburger thing for someone else’s project. After school on Thursday she finished up the head and put it on the rack to be bisque. On Friday it was freedom Friday. I get to do anything. I worked on glazing  a mug for myself and I tried to glaze mu plate for a present for someone but I didn’t have enough time. A strength I had this week was overcoming my fear of making the puppet and just doing it. I went back to my original idea to make a octopi instead of a fisherman boy. A stretch I had this week was trying to decide how to execute my puppet head because the head was every heavy on one side. It just wasn’t really balanced. By making personal decisions on what I wanted to make. It was a hard discission to destroy my human head and start over from scratch again. A goal for next week is to start making the tentacles and come up with a costume over the weekend. Also to start painting the head.

Week#16, May 30, Puppet

Core competency: Creative Thinking, developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Glaze: Glazing is a technique used by artist to create depth, and color. It involves applying a thin, transparent or semi-transparent layer of paint or other medium over a dry layer of paint. A glaze can modify the a appearance of the underlying paint layer by changing chroma, value, or texture, Glazing can be done with oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, or other mediums.

This week I worked on my a side inquiry project my pool and also worked on the arms for my puppet. On Monday I started to paint the ladder on my pool and also add the checkered pattern on the outside of the pool. Monday night she worked on her pool at 12:45am and she finished the black lines by 1:30am. On Tuesday Taryn didn’t realize she had to go to the spoken word finials, so that was kind of a bummer but, that okay cause I worked on my pool last night. Tuesday after school she started to glaze the outside of it and the ladder. Wherever I put acrylic paint on gets glossed by acrylic media. I finished that up and took pictures of it. On Wednesday Taryn worked on making a birthday for someone. She didn’t actually give it to this person because she chickened out but its whatever. On Wednesday after school in art club, she filed down the hole in the puppet so it was smoother, then she started to create 1 human hand and 1 tentacle for my octopi. On Thursday she continued working on the “arms” for the puppet. I just shaved them down so they were not so heavy. I didn’t even geta chance to put some balls/cups on the arms. Thursday after school she started to put the suction cups on and then she went home. On Friday it was freedom Friday. I get to do anything. I worked on my puppet because I am done with it. like over. I want to be completed with this clay part of it this week and start to do other things next week. I continued on making the balls for the tentacles and then after school I stayed for a bit to complete it. A strength I had this week was buckling down and pushing through the obstacle of creating arms for my creature. A stretch I had this week was creating the little balls to scratch and slip onto the body. It was difficult to make sure the sizes were the same for the 2 balls but a but smaller than the ones before. A goal for next week is to start painting the head and tentacle. I want to have my plate bisque and to have the head and arms painting for my puppet.

Week#17, June 6, Puppet

Core competency: Personal Awareness and Responsibility, Self-regulation

Vocabulary word: Unity. Unity is a principle in art that refers to a set of compositional strategies used by an artist to make the parts of a painting or another work of art hang together as a whole through visual relatedness.

This week I worked on my a side inquiry project my pool and also worked on the arms for my puppet. I started to paint my octopi head and arms. I also started my inquiry project that has been sitting in my bin since I started it in February. On Monday I didn’t do anything because I was studying for I test I had later in the day. After school on Monday, she came in the art room to glaze her plate and finally start my inquiry project. Yes. I know. Its been some time since I continued the process of working on my inquiry project. On Tuesday Taryn worked on her inquiry project. She started to roll out more slabs of clay and it was painful getting them the same size and width. Tuesday after school she started to assemble the clay to form the “container” part of the sardine can. On Wednesday Taryn worked on making smoothing out the finished produce of the can. She put it on the bisque shelf and was reading to start painting her octopi. On Wednesday after school in art club, she had limited time to work on things. She cleaned her old pallet and put fresh paint on it. Started to put a dark blue as a base coat for the octopi head. On Thursday she continued working on painting the head of the octopi. She added some highlights to add depth and dimension to it. On Friday it was freedom Friday. She continued doing painting her puppet head and did a bit a math studying for her test next block. Friday she wasn’t able to stay afterschool because she had to catch the 5:00 Ferry. She left school early to go to the ferries. A strength I had this week was being self-regulating and getting done my inquiry project in 2 days. It was a struggle trying to fit the lid of the can with the body of it because it needed to be tight but not too tight that the lid wouldn’t go on. A stretch I had this week was getting the walls on the sardine  can to not cave in on me when it dried and while fitting the lid on it. A goal for next week is finish all the painting on my puppet and to start painting my sardine can and designing my outfit for puppet.

Week#18, June 13, Puppet

Core competency: Creative Thinking, developing ideas

Vocabulary word: Ombre’: Ombre in art is the blending of one color to another, usually moving tints and shades from dark to light.

This week I worked on my puppet head and arms. I finished painting the Puppet head, tentacle and the human hand. She also worked on her inquiry project and started dealing with Boris’s outfit. On Monday I finished painting my octopi head and started to paint the tentacle. I added some light highlights on the head and started to paint the base of the tentacle color the dark blue color. For the suction cups I did a dark blue ompre’d to light blue. On Monday after school, she stayed for a bit to complete the tentacle and start painting the hand human color. If i do say so myself, the tentacle looks pretty good. On the other hand, AH Ha AH Ha, get it. Hand. Anyways that’s not looking too hot right now. Kind of green, black and some blue in there with the human color. On Tuesday Taryn worked on painting her clay hand. Originally I was going to have it “human color” but I was like this is an octopi and what octopi would have a “human color” looking arm. I colored it bluey-green to not exactly math the head and tentacle but have some similarities. I finished that than worked on my sardine can. I went to jones to get some sand paper and start to get my clay can smother. On Wednesday Taryn continued working on the sanding part of the sardine can. I also started to paint the inside of the can a silver color and then did a base coat on the outside of the can white. On Wednesday after school in art club, she had a dentist appointment so she couldn’t go. Taryn was sad. Very sad. Wednesday night/Thursday morning she started to do the sketches for the outfits at 1AM. Yeah. I know. Crazy person. On Thursday she started to unstitch the handles on the bag that she was going to use for the outfit, then started to plan out the bow tie. Thursday after school she continued working on painting the sardine can. She did those blue-purple color. She unfortunately didn’t get to finish it because her ride was here. On Friday it was freedom Friday, but she wasn’t in class. Instead she was volunteering at Castle Park elementary school o do their activity day thang. A strength I had this week was starting to get some assignments in and just rap up everything. A stretch I had this week actually starting the outfit for the puppet. I was scared to start it. A goal for next week is to be done with Boris and to finish up my inquiry project.

Week#19, June 20, Puppet

Core competency: Personal Awareness and Responsibility, Self-determination

Vocabulary word: Balance. Balance in art is one of the basic principles of design that refers to how the elements of art relate to each other in terms of their visual weight. Balance creates a sense of equilibrium, stability, or order in a composition, which can be appealing of intentional. Balance does not necessarily imply symmetry, but rather an arrangement that evokes balance in viewers.

This week I worked on my puppets outfit and completing all assignments.

On Monday I didn’t do any art. I was more worried about out my math test that I had next block then some art that I don’t know what to do. Its the puppet outfit that I have to do next. On Tuesday Taryn finished up editing her essay for English. She went to the library to print some things off and came back to art class. Tuesday after school she stared to hot glue the puppets bow tie together, then figured out a way to turn it inside out and now she has to find a way to tie it. On Wednesday Taryn worked on making the puppet Boris and she finished it. She hotglued the dress to the head and arms and then she got Summer to tie a bow tie on the puppet. Finally she photo documented the puppet. On Wednesday after school in art club, she found out that there was no art club. She chilled at school and did some homework. Her friend also ate her cookie, and Taryn was really sad. She took her wall decal home. On Thursday she continued working on her edublog and getting peer feedback on her puppet. She handed in everything and receive this beautiful painting from Georgia. Thursday after school she glazed her sardine can and covered it in baby powder so it wasn’t so sticky. On Friday it was last day of school, so we did year book signing. A strength I had this week was getting all my assignments in by Friday. A stretch I had this week breaking the clay arm for my puppet. I almost started to cry because I just wasn’t having it Wednesday. A goal for next week is to be relaxed on vacation.

Reflection:
I have learned from this assignment, that it is very difficult to make a puppet. Like I thought it was going to be a piece of cake but it turns out that the cake actually ate me instead. Boris was getting a bit rushed at the end here. I poured my heart and soul into this puppet even if Boris isn’t looking the hottest. A core competencies I would connect it to would be, Critical Thinking, question and investigate. The reason why I chose this one was because throughout this whole process, I’ve had setbacks and i had to question why I kept facing those challenges. I had to dig deeper into the problem and find out what I was doing wrong. I included some PEADs and IDS such as juxtaposition and elaboration, and texture and color. How I incorporated texture and color was by adding layers ranging from darkest to lightest for color to enhance the depths of it and for texture was making holes in the head and scratching it when the clay was leather hard. For juxtaposition and elaboration, I had a human arm and a tentacle. Those are very different things and do not belong in the universe or on the same creature. For elaboration I added a lot of detail in the head of Boris, but also the cups on his tentacles. And the coloring on that was OMG, so sexy. A personal connection I had with Boris were, the proportions with the limbs were off. He had a tentacle and a human arm. I have 2 human arms buts that’s not what I’m talking about. What I’m saying is that I have 2 different size eyes and 2 different size feet. Crazy. So Boris and I are alike in that way. a stretch I had was overcoming my fear of creating this puppet. I changed my original idea so many times because I did not like it. One question I have for myself would be, if I had more time, would I have made an outfit or added something to bedazzle it more.

Artist statement:
1) What your initial ideas was:
My initial ideas were this sardine can, and the planning of it didn’t change at all. Maybe just the color of the can. It was going to be a lighter purple color, but I like how this color turned out.
2) If your idea changed, or was added to:
I did cut out some original ideas, such as the detail on the sardine. I didn’t want to make the sardine too complicated and I didn’t want to risk messing up the beautiful ombre colors on the sardine. It was too pretty to mess up.
3) What you learned the most from during the making of this project:
Color matching for the whole can is very difficult when you mix small amounts of paint at a time. It was hard to keep the same color to cover the whole surface area.

1) What your initial ideas was:
This was something cute I saw on Pinterest and I just knew that I wanted to create this. It doesn’t seem like something practical, but it made me happy. This exact product, was my original idea.
2) If your idea changed, or was added to:
No, nothing changed.. The reference photo looks exactly what I made only cleaner. The ladder is a different color though and they glazed everything, when I only glazed the bottom and used acrylic paint for the rest of the pool.
3) What you learned the most from during the making of this project.
It is very hard to create those squiggly lines on the bottom of the pool. I lied The lines on the outside of the pool were very difficult. It takes a long time to create a simple piece of art.
