Question,

How might a food web that includes a consumer that is a threatened species (in low numbers) be affected if the consumers population continues to decline?

A food web that includes a consumer that is a threatened species can be affected  if the population continues to decrease by not having a consumer to eat the organism before them. This can be a 1st degree consumer, or 1st degree producer. Since there would be no organism to eat the other, this would mean that the consumer would increase in growth and population to an extent where it’d get bad and affect the ecosystem. As well, if the consumers population declines this means the consumers beyond their level would not have much to eat.

Story

Once upon a time there was a Barred owl named Katherine. Katherine loved to adventure; she’d spread her wings high and go to places she’d never been before. One day, she found herself in a city called Port Coquitlam, located in a temperate rain forest of British Columbia. Katherine is an Apex Predator. This means that she has no natural predator. Because Katherine is an apex predator, this makes her be at the top of her food chain(s).

As a small owl, Katherine used to go with her mother in the nest. There she learned how to fly and picked up many characteristics such as hunting for prey from her mother. She’d hunt at night, and sleep in the day. Katherine loved to hunt for animals such as small rodents and mammals. Because Kathrine enjoyed eating this animals, she actually helped crop land and other type of lands being ruined by these rodents. Like other owls, Katherine is awake at night and falls asleep in the daytime.

Since Katherine would play a big role in the environment as an owl, she also interactions with the earths 4 spheres. These are the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geosphere. When it comes to the Atmosphere, naturally Katherine is an owl and can fly. The way she interacts with the atmosphere is by flying places, not all animals can do this.  With  the biosphere, she likes to eat small rodents, and with the Geosphere she could naturally pick up sticks to make a nest for her children.

That is the story of Katherine. Humans never minded since she captured prey at night and slept in the day after a big feast. Katherine never moved out of Port Coquitlam, or Bc, in fact she lived happily ever after.

Solution Fluency Presentation

Debrief

Working on this project was quite easy and very informational. I learned a lot, and got to bond with my partner, Katherine. Personally, I feel like the project could've have more effort put-into it towards some of the research and our dilemma, but other than that I feel that we did great. As well, doing this project helped me expand my mindset on where the world is leading too and how fast it's taking humans to do something they couldn't have thought of doing not even a century ago.

Meiosis Stop Motion Project

May 10, 2022

Introduction

For my stop motion project I decided to work with Nathan on the process of Meiosis. During the project we worked hard together and did our best on producing the project. We got to combine our knowledge and collaborate and what we would like to do with the model, script, and more. In the video, you will see how we used our separate strengths and how it made the project better.

Video

Analysis Questions

Why did you decide to model Mitosis or Meiosis-one over the other? Be Specific!

My partner and I choose to model meiosis since we figured after modelling mitosis it would be easier for us to model Meiosis, as well we wanted to challenge ourselves and see if we could grow our knowledge of Meiosis.

What was the most challenging thing in making your movie?

Personally, the most challenging part of making the movie was creating the model of Meiosis in under an hour and twenty-minutes. I felt under pressure to finish the video with my partner since we only had one block to do it due to the pro-d day. Gladly, I can say that my partner and I were resilient about this and finished in the block.

What was the easiest thing to do in making your movie?

The easiest part of creating the movie was the editing process. It didn’t take long for me to complete editing this video since it wasn’t long at all. As well, the voice over was easy since there was a script made before doing anything.

How could you improve your movie?

One way my partner and I could improve our movie would be by getting better pictures. Since we were in a rush we didn’t pay enough attention the how to camera is moving or where the model is in the picture. Therefore, the video could be improved by better photography.

Thinking about how you worked with your partner, what were some of the challenges and the successes of working in a group?

Working with Nathan was a pleasure. We work really well together, and we go to use our strengths in the project to make the project better. One challenge was not getting enough time with each other to work on the project, and one success or working in a duo with Nathan was dividing the work into half.

Why is Mitosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Mitosis?

Mitosis is the division of a single cell into two daughter cells that are identical (cell division). Mitosis is the process through which a single cell splits into two identical cells. Therefore, the point of cells performing Mtiosis is mostly used to increase cell growth and replacement.

Why is Meiosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Meiosis?

Meiosis is a process that produces gametes, or sex cells. Four daughter cells are formed during meiosis. Therefore, the point of cells performing Meiosis is to produce sex cells.

Xenon – Element Sway

Xenon
by Tarek Diabmarzouk

What questions did you need to research in order to create your sway?

Some questions that I had to research in order to create my sway contained me looking at a variety of different websites and pictures. I had to research things such as, “Who discovered Xenon” to “What is the melting point of Xenon.” It was an exciting process since I learned a lot, and had to always fact-check that everything was true. In other words, while researching something you must be straightforward with your question to find the correct answer. This is something I had to learn the hard way. Therefore, I had to research many questions to create my sway.

What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

For all my projects, I like to use 3 digital tools. Creative Commons, Google and Gale Databases. For this project, I mainly used Creative Commons and Google. This is simply because I could not find a lot on Gale about Xenon. I’m glad I found good information about Xenon on Google, as well as very nice pictures on Creative Commons.  I did not try any new digital tools for this project, but hopefully, on my next project, I will.

What was the process you used to investigate the topic and how did you verify and cite the information you found?

The process I used to investigate the topic was very easy. For every piece of info, I’d find I’d go to several different sites and verify if they all say the same thing. If this was the case I’d put the information in my project, and if it wasn’t, I would not. However, for my citation, it was really easy to do. I put all my links into citation machine and they cited them for me! I love that website.

How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

The process of completing this challenge was a very smooth one and was not really challenging at all. I found it really easy to do this project, and I can’t wait to do more. Although, on that thought, while doing my future projects I would try to make it a tiny bit longer so there could be more information than the element/subject. I enjoyed creating this project and can’t wait to work on my other one and do even better on it!

Respect

“It’s a Bird,” created by Christian Cooper

When I look at this image, I immediately realize that it is about prejudice, racism and disrespect/respect in many societies. Because of the colour of his skin, the European woman feels frightened by this African-American teenager. The European lady in the photo is making aggressive motions, indicating that she has no regard for him or what he has to give society. I can clearly see things like rudeness, and the author is demonstrating that individuals need to respect others more. In addition, in the first slide, you can see African-Americans behind the teenager who has died as a result of police violence in America. They are a dark blue colour, indicating that they have died. When I initially saw this photograph, I was outraged, but not shocked, because there are so many individuals who are illiterate and can’t see that no one is greater than themselves. And my lingering thoughts after that were still filled with anger, but more by the understanding that people lose their lives as a result of individuals like the woman in the photo, and that we live in a systematic-racist culture. And it bothers me that the African-American child had to drop his gaze because he doesn’t want to wind up in a worse scenario because of this dumb woman. Anyone should be able to respond to such nasty remarks. The author, Christian Cooper, appears to be implying that racism is still alive and well, but with much more naïve and illiterate individuals. The interpretation of gestures, chat boxes, look, and other elements, serves as a reminder that African-Americans are still dying at the hands of police, because of individuals like this European woman in this photograph. It’s plainly crazy that this is still happening, but we can’t ignore it, which is why we must fight against what’s wrong. What’s more ludicrous is that the woman prefers to victimize herself despite the fact that she has nothing to do with the victim. It makes no sense to live in a civilized nation when residents are still more privileged than others. Should I bring up the term “civilized” again? The way I see it is, if North American countries are so civilized, why do white people gain more than other races from living here? So, what I believe the author is attempting to imply is, being polite to everyone, maybe it will even save their life.

Rashida: Yeah, I guess…

James: Oh, come on just admit it was fun

Rashida: Okay, okay fine it was really fun.

James: That’s more like it

Lil E: Hey guy’s what are you talking bout?

James: Oh, just the party last night

Rashida: Oooh that reminds me, there’s another one on Saturday!

Lil E: are you sure you want to go to that? It drains all your energy and you become really mean.

Rashida: Yess, I’m positive. You should come with us to try it out. Maybe you’ll see why I do it.

James: Exactly what she said.

Rashida: See, nothing to worry about

Lil E: Mhm, no I don’t really want to do that.

Rashida: Ugh whatever

James: Let’s get out of here

Lil E: Wait, what if we go to the pool instead?

James: Mhm, no I don’t like going to the pool.

Lil E: ok fine what about going to the mountains to ski and get fresh air?

Rashida: Ooh yes, I like that idea but when is it going to be?

Lil E: Saturday?

Rashida: Umm, ok I guess we could go there’s going to be other parties anyway

James: Yeah, I guess you’re right

Lil E: So, it’s on? Okay, on Saturday meet me at my place at 8 am

Rashida: That’s early but sure see you there

James: Okay, okay, I’ll go too.

Lil E: Perfect see you then.

Lil E: Wait, stop!

Rashida: What?

Lil E: I’m having second thoughts about that guy, James.

Rashida: What do you mean?

Lil E: I don’t know, somethings off about him. He’s kinda sketchy.

Rashida: What’s sketchy about him?

Lil E: Isn’t he the one that’s dragging you into all of those parties?

Rashida: Yeah, but those are fun, and I enjoy them.

Lil E: What do you do at the parties that are so fun?

Rashida: What if I take you to one of them?

Lil E: Okay fine, but just a small one.

Rashida: I know one that will be just right for ya’.

Lil E: Promis me you won’t do anything stupid.

Rashida: Can we invite James then?

Lil E: Since he brings you to all the parties then sure. You can bring him with us.

Rashida: James wait! I need to tell you something important.

James: Wanna step inside, it’s a little bit cold outside.

Rashida: Wanna have a seat?

James: So what’s the problem?

Rashida: Well, Lil E thinks there is a problem with parties.

James: Why would there be something wrong with parties? I don’t know what could be wrong with parties.

Rashida: She just doesn’t like them.

**RASHIDA TELLS HIM ABOUT THE PARTY**

Rashida: Well you can come if you want.

James: Okay, I guess I’ll come.

Rashida: Okay, I gotta head to English class. See you!

James: Okay, bye!

James: Oh, Lil E!

Lil E: Hey!

Lil E: Have you heard about the party tomorrow?

James: Rashida told me a little bit about it.

Lil E: So you’re up for it?

James: I already told her that I’d come, so I’ll be there.

Lil E: Ok see you on Saturday, and tomorrow!

Questions:

1.) What are the influences involved in your role play? (i.e., difference of opinion, going against your values, pressure from friends, pressure from a dating partner, etc.)

-Sophia, your friend that is usually shy gets influenced to go to parties.

-Tarek is a popular friend that invites her to parties

-Elandi gets pressured to go to parties with Sophia because she doesn’t want to go alone.

2.) Write a script for your role play (on a separate sheet of paper).

Look above.

3.) Explain how your conflict/issue was resolved. What skills were used to resolve this conflict/issue?

-They use negotiating skills to get out of Sophia’s (Rashida’s) issue

-Elandi gets Sophia’s attention to not go to parties anymore

4.) How would using these skills make the person in the role play more resilient?

Using these skills would make the person more resilient since we are not forcing them to not go to parties, but to bring it down a notch. This will make the person get over the addiction to parties and be resilient amongst it. Not everyone can just get rid of an addiction, but they can be resilient about it.

Grammar Video Project – “Adverbs, adjectives, pronouns (types), articles, common vs. proper nouns”

December 15, 2021

Project by: Tarek & Samantha

Video

Written Portion

Our video demonstrates how to properly employ adverbs, adjectives, pronouns (types), articles, common and proper nouns. Firstly, adverbs are words that explain the action of a verb. As an example, “consider how lightly the snow dropped on the earth.” This example works because there is one word describing another. Adjectives are words that describe a noun’s attributes or states of being. “She was beautiful,” for example, would work since beautiful describes a noun’s characteristic (the beauty of the person). Pronouns are words that allude to the person being discussed. “She ran a lap,” for example, is an example of a pronoun. This is an example since we are referring to someone using their correct pronouns. Articles are words that indicate whether a noun is specific or unspecific. An example of an article might be “she has a broken umbrella.” This example works because it specifies that the girl’s umbrella is broken. Another approach to utilize this example is to state. “She has an umbrella.” This also works because it does not mention that the umbrella is damaged. In a class or group, a common noun is the name of a person, place, or object. Common nouns, unlike proper nouns, are not capitalized. “My favourite newspaper is…” rather than “my favourite Newspaper is…” is an example of a common noun. A proper noun is the semi-opposite of a common noun. A proper noun is the capitalized name of a person, place, or thing. “I ordered the laptop from Amazon,” for example, is a proper noun. This is a common case because Amazon is a capitalized organization’s name.

Indigenous exploration – “Living Conditions”

October 27, 2021

True North Aid

The project my group and I created was really well flowed and did not take out any of our free time. We used our school time efficiently and we got the written part of the project done faster than we thought. That way we all learned about Indigenous living conditions together. So, in general, creating this project was really easy. I’m glad we got to finish it as a group together.

As I said above my group and I researched about this topic when we were together at school. We all learned new information about Indigenous living conditions together. Some things we knew about and the newly researched items were completely unknown to us. It was really interesting to research for this project since we all got to learn about how Indigenous people are living unfairly on their own reserves.

One obstacle that my group faced while recording was not being able to get the recording right the first time. It took us a couple of tries to get the recording right since we all felt nervous around the mic. We eventually were able to get the recording correctly and we were able to do the final touches together.

To be able to communicate the things that I have learned is really easy and the ways we did it as a group was really well flowed. While learning about the living conditions we made sure to stay respectful and on task, that way we would learn more. That’s how my whole group participated in their knowledge. When it came to myself, I would be able to communicate my knowledge by using Word and sharing the information I found on websites such as curio.ca and stat.gov.ca. These are both great resources, so when any of us were confused we would ask each other about what we were trying to display or what we are trying to do in that specific part of the document. So, you can say that we all shared our communication of learning together and that helped me do my part better.

A Mountain Journey

October 6, 2021

A Mountain Journey

1. What was Dave Conroy doing out in the wilderness? (motivation)

His motivation for going out into the forest was to support his family by trapping to support his family.

2. At what point does the reader know the protagonist is in serious trouble and not likely to make it to MacMoran’s cabin? (plot)

The reader knows that the protagonist is in trouble when he fell into the frozen river.

3. What three critical mistakes did Conroy make? What are some of the things he could have done to prevent himself from freezing? (plot)

The three critical mistakes that Conroy made were when he didn’t stop at the tree in the beginning, he continued going on instead. Also not waiting till March was not a coincidence for him, if he were to wait until March there would’ve been better temperatures. And the last one was he didn’t stop and dry himself off immediately. Some things he could’ve done were that first of all go In March for better weather, and he could’ve made smarter decisions when stopping and when he got into conflict with nature.

4. Determine the elements of plot in this story: exposition, complicating incident, 3 crises, climax, and the denouement.

The story’s exposition is that Dave Conroy who is exhausted and alone in the wilderness, attempting to find refuge to avoid death. The complicated incident is that he did not stop at the tree to build his camp. Three crises are occurring: he is falling on the ice, he is not drying himself off, and he is unable to open the matches. The story’s climax occurs when he lies down to rest, and its denouement occurs when Dave begins hallucinating and dies.

5. Describe the setting – how does the setting affect the plot and the theme of the story? What is the theme – write a theme statement for this story.

The setting of this story is in the snowy alpine mountains, it is in February since it is 2 weeks before March, and the setting is also in a span of a week time. The setting affects the plot and theme of the story since it gives Conroy extra difficulties to face during the story. The basic theme of the story is that we should be patient in life since if you’re not there could be many consequences, so why face them when you could just wait?

6. Find one example of symbolic setting (concrete place that represents something abstract) and explain its meaning. Quote four images from the story that make effective comparisons (figurative language: simile, metaphor, and personification)

The cabin is a representation of a failing conclusion since Conroy really was going to look for the cabin but at the end, he sees that there is no Cabin laying around and that it has been burnt down.

7. Quote four images from the story that make effective comparisons (figurative language: simile, metaphor, and personification)

Metaphor – the cold was an old man’s finger feeling fatly through his clothes

Simile – …had sunk a foot in the new snow, white and soft as flour.

… “tea red strong as rum”

Personification – swayed as the wing sighed through them
