Job- teacher
For TOKTW day I went with my mom to her school. She is a grade 4/5 teacher at Alouette elementary school and has been teaching for the past 20 years. She got her bachelors of education degree in 1995 from SFU as well as her PDP teacher training certificate.
After spending the day with my mom, I learned a lot about the challenges and advantages about being a teacher. Although the students were all very nice, I found that it was hard getting their attention and it was hard trying to keep everyone on task as they always wanted to be moving around. I learned how to problem solve a lot better and find a balance between getting the work done but also having some fun. Although it was not a P.E day the day I was there, we had a fitness break in class, we did Mindful breathing and I even played some volleyball with the kids outside once they were done their work.
Some of the things that she likes about teaching are the satisfaction of seeing the kids learn new things every day and the creativity and freedom of being able to teach the way she wants to in class.
I really enjoyed working with the kids and I even had the opportunity to help coach the grade 6/7 boy’s volleyball team after school. I really liked interacting with the kid and trying to make their day more enjoyable and fun. I also liked learning more about each kid. I got the opportunity to work one on one with a kid that needed a lot of help around the classroom with his schoolwork and although sometimes it was hard to interact with the student, I got a lot of satisfaction from helping him out.
Despite the fact that I had an amazing day and learned a lot more about what my mom does almost every day, I don’t think that I would want to become a teacher as it seems very stressful and the 6 hours of classroom time seems busy, intense and non-stop.
