Finding the Surface Area of a Composite Object

image

I calculated the surface area of this oatmeal box which has the gold box ontop of it.

  1. I calculated the surface area of each object – 157.25(gold box), 965 (oatmeal box)
  2. since there is an overlap where the gold and oatmeal box meet, I had to subtract the area of the square where they meet( 965-72.25=892.75)
  3. Add the surface area of the 2 objects together- 892.75 + 229.5 = 1,122.25

Total Surface Area=1,122.25

Surface area(S.A)- Each 3-D figure has 2-D figures that make it 3-D. You take the area of the 2-D figures, add them together then you get the Surface area for the 3-D object. Surface area is the units around an object.

Volume(V)- amount of space that a 3-D object takes up (base times width times height=volume.)
