‘I’ll be silently judged’: Why millennial women ‘age up’ to be taken seriously at work
What is the article about?
This article talks about a woman pointing out the fact that males have it being effortless to look professional compared to the female workers that have to dress up in a skirt, blazer or dress in her workplace daily to meet that standard. In some cases, women may also have wore glasses and applying makeup to oppose the struggle. The women are required to do this because if they don’t meet up with expectations, then they won’t be taken seriously and legitimately to be heard during work.
Who does it involve?
This article mentions a women named Lauren that complains the difference of a hassle between the males and females so it would be ensured they would look professional. Furthermore, Lauren uses her 40 year old male boss as an example for wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers and that would easily be considered as meeting the standard.
Why did you choose this article?
I chose this article out of the rest because I found this topic intriguing on how we are in a society that we are having difficulties to have women benefit from what they wear to work, equal how men wear what clothes to work as well. The second reason is because this article related very much to the Initiating Incident of the book “The Friday Everything Changed” when compared to the other Gender Equality articles.
How does this news article relate to the story we are reading- The Friday Everything Changed?
This news article relates to the story we are reading because in the book “The Friday Everything Changed”, the boys always were the always ones to carry the bucket of water for getting away for possibly half an hour from school. While the girls were always the people that were not recognized as an alternative of a different gender to go pick up the bucket of water. This is similar to this context because women in her workplace never had the opportunity to dress up with less expectations like the males so their lifestyle would be easier, just like how convenient it would be if we everyone had the chance to dodge school and relieve themselves of thirty minutes.
