Self Reflection:

Types of sentences we introduced in the video are compound, complex, and compound-complex. Each type of sentence is defined by the use of independent and dependent clauses, conjunctions, and subordinators. All three of them contain a clause, whether it is dependent or independent. A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses. A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Lastly, a compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that are normally used to add more detail to the noun in a sentence. Independent clause expresses a complete thought, while a dependent sentence doesn’t. Meaning an independent clause can be a sentence by itself, but a dependent clause wouldn’t make sense if it was by itself.

To put it in simpler words, compound sentence has two main ideas (clauses) that can be separate sentences by themselves but are connected into one. Complex sentences have one main idea (clause), and one or more subordinate ideas that add more detail to the subject. Compound-complex sentences are a little confusing since they are the longest. These sentences consist of two or more main ideas, and one or more supporting ideas. A clause is a group of words that includes a subject and a verb. An independent clause can be by itself, and the sentence would still make sense, but a dependent clause wouldn’t.

Compound sentence-  A compound sentence is a sentence that connects two independent clauses or two separate thoughts with a conjunction and sometimes a comma or semicolon. It joins the ideas into one unified sentence.

Example: I’m making a cake for Madison, because her birthday is tomorrow.

“I’m making a cake for Madison” This is the first independent clause, then it is followed by a comma into the second independent clause “because her birthday is tomorrow.”

Complex sentence- A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependant clauses. Its best used for providing lots of information when explaining your sentence’s main point.

Example: When the cupcakes start to brown, remove them from the oven.

“When the cupcakes start to brown” Is the independent clause “, remove them from the oven” is the dependent clause.

Compound-Complex sentence- a compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses + at least one dependant clause. It’s a combination of a compound and complex sentence. They are sometimes hard to identify as compound-complex sentences are quite lengthy.

Example: When I grow up, I want to be a baker, and my grandma is proud of me.

“When I grow up” Is the dependent clause of the sentence  “I want to be a baker” is the first independent clause “and my grandma is proud of me” is the second independent clause.
