Social reflection #6
– Concept of History
Why we have to learn history? Most people say, “to avoid making the same mistake again.” This is also the right reason but I think, history is the basis of the things. If we want to learn something, first we have to know what is it. I think history is also basic to know about this country we live in. And I don’t think history only means the past. I think we are constantly making history, just as the moment we live now becomes the past a second later. Currently, we learn only about important events that happened in the past through history. Through such events, it seems to show how we have developed and how to solve the problems that are still lacking.
– Minority groups before 1914
-The Chinese head tax-
Between 1885 and 1923, the Chinese Immigration Act imposed a corporate tax on Chinese entering Canada. With few exceptions, the Chinese had to pay $50 to come to Canada. Later, they had to pay more money. Although the first major wave of Chinese immigrants, which began in 1858, began with a gold rush, many Chinese immigrants came to build CPR. In 1885, the Commission concluded that there was little evidence to support the negative claims against China, but Chinese immigration helped the development of British Columbia.
-The Komagata Maru-
The Komagata Maru was an incident that ruled out immigrants from India from Canada. When Indian immigrants tried to immigrate to Canada on a ship, the Canadian government sent Indian immigrants back for a long time. When they returned to India, most of them were arrested by the British government and many people were shot during the arrest process.
In addition to these incidents, there have been incidents where Canada has opposed many immigrants.
The exclusion of black Oklahoman farmers from coming to Canada in 1910
They came to Canada to avoid racism. However, Canada rejected all black immigrants because Canada thought they were unfit to immigrate to Canada. And this was after 1914, but from 1920 until the end of World War II, Canada rejected Jewish immigrants.
Immigration itself can help the country develop, but in the short term, an increasing number of immigrants can help with economic difficulties. Even in past, Canada might not be ready for a lot of immigrants.
– Women’s history, Equality
Women have been discriminated against for being weak in the history of Canada as well as other countries. Many people in the past hated women’s involvement in politics and thought they could not be leaders. In Canada in the past, women have not been able to vote and have been oppressed in many forms of life. However, unlike what people thought in the past, women were not weak.
It can only be seen in World War I. During World War I, many men were out to fight, so there was a huge manpower shortage. But it was the women who filled the vacancy. They kept their homes, grew crops and fed the soldiers. Although many women’s rights have been found because people have broken prejudice from the past to the present. But I think it is difficult to say that our world is still equal. I think the difficult but sure way is to get rid of prejudice and listen to the voices of more people.

Social Reflection #5
Reflection #5
Ways to make change.
We live in being satisfied with everything and can not live. But if it goes socially, people want to change what they are not satisfied to be satisfied. And we learned about the big frame of lobbies, petitions, and civil disobedience that can “way to change” in the social class. Actually, to me, Lobbies is the confused one, But I understood it as the concept of power. A petition is used to call attention to the issue of public interest or concern and to require that effect. When petitioning is needed, it is necessary not to be an individual’s opinion, so it is done in the form of a signing exercise, collecting opinions of citizens and submitting them to the government. Therefore, I think the petition is the closest way to communicate with citizens. And Civil disobedience. It refers to the act of publicly rejecting the law of the country or the order of the government or ruling power when it is judged unfair. It usually nonviolence but not always. I learned by teaching that these “ways to change” are not only used to change big things. If we are not satisfied with the school, we can do enough petition or civil disobedience. I think the lobbies I understand are not good enough. I think these various “ways to change” methods are all communication in a big sense. I hope that people will be able to reflect on their opinions and take better account of better laws and better worlds.
Election systems
I thought the election was one of the fairways to pick something. However, when Mr. Chan took the example of voting in the class, my thoughts changed a bit. Three students went out of the class and we just vote for a person that we wanted. We changed the rules of the vote every time and according to the rules of vote changed the results also changed. I think the reason we vote is to choose fair. But I think that only voting rules should not be fair. If we have to pick one of them and one of them has a lot of money and can advertise more, it is not fair. Therefore, in order to be fair, the choice should also be fair. I heard that BC is currently using a voting system called First Past the Post (FPTP). FPTP Voting is a way for voters to display their choice on the ballot. That way, the person with the most votes will win. In addition, there are various election methods such as Dual Member Proportional (DMP), Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) and Rural-Urban Proportional (RUP). I believe that the voting methods we have now are ways to help fair choices that have evolved over time.

Reflection question #3
Poverty II
I’m sure this part is the hardest part to me. In the world, there has some poor country. Poverty is circulated and affects the country. So, we learned about the world bank, IMF, WTD, MNC, and SAP. First, WB (World Bank) and IMF(International monetary fund). They both set up by the UN and they are planned to help poor countries. WB lent the money for the country so they can develop their economy and IMF gave them a plan and manage for the money. But this IMF is not always good. If the countries borrow the money from the WB and IMF, it means the country has to follow their lead (ex. They have to sell any resources that IMF wants even by force) and it’s called SAP(structural adjustment program). The SAP is a thing that for ensures the repayment of the loan from debtor countries. The results of SAP wasn’t good because it used all of the resources of the countries that means they don’t have any profit left. And all of that resources were controlled by MNC(Multi-national company). MNC try to developed the countries so it is kind of ‘Open door’ from the poor country. WTO is (World trade organization) but actually, I still can’t really understand about this.
Last Friday we had a homework that read the story in ‘Kiva’ and choose the one story that we can donate $25. I could read a lot of story in Kiva that they need our helps. All people’s story was different but they were all eager. I even saw a story from the girl who almost same with my age. I was so sad because I only know there has lot of people who needs help not the story and who they are. I hope the world will make a more, new, good policy so lot of people can get a help.
Reflection question #2
- Poverty: The concept of poverty varies, generally speaking, the basic desire is not met. It’s similar to “poor”, which means that you do not have enough. Before Social class I wasn’t interested in ‘Poverty’ Even I didn’t think about that. And When I met the homeless I always afraid, so I tried to avoid them. I think the homeless was not a good image. But the video that we saw in the social class changed my mind. In that Video, there was a story about the homeless. And the Video was telling to us that people in poverty they are not lazy and they are trying to find the work but they are still in poverty. After seeing the video, the width of my thinking has changed. I could feel it. I went to the downtown after I saw that video. And I saw a lot of homeless. Actually I still afraid of homeless but this time it was little different. It was homeless people who were always scary, dark and disinclined. But I can see they are trying hard. I was able to see many musicians and artists among homeless people, which relieved the fear of the homeless. I learned poverty is still one of the problems that humanity has not solved today. One of the problems that even advanced countries have not addressed is poverty. Actually, I still do not know how we can solve poverty. The resources that humans can use are very limited, so also I thought that maybe poverty might not be solved forever. However, I hope that our gaze on “poverty” will escape from prejudice.
2. Discrimination :
- Discrimination is the act that exclusion, discrimination or disadvantage and infringe political, social, and economic equality without reason for reasons such as religion, disability, status, educational background, past, race, physical condition, nationality, age, Favor present, sex, appearance, sexual orientation, and etc. All kinds of discrimination started with “difference”. Some people didn’t accept the “difference” and they always thought they are right so that’s why the discrimination happens. A small number of people who are targeted at ‘discrimination’ are hurt by a multitude of actions, words and even gaze that discriminate against them. I have also been hurt by discrimination. I was doing homework with my friend. And one of the other friend came to us and gave a chocolate only to my friend. So I looked at him and he said to me “You should not eat those because you have to lose your weight” I was so sad when I heard that sound but it wasn’t just once it. That situation happens over and over. I saw my friends did, and one of my teacher in Korea did, my friends mom also said kind of that to me and I also saw in social media comments. And the most sad thing was if someone said to them “ It’s not your business” It will be better but nobody said that. I learned one of human developed in UN is ‘self-esteem’. But discrimination makes my self-esteem fell. We know around 7.7 billion people are now living on earth and all of that people can’t be the same. We have to respect human rights. We also have to accept that all the people in the world can’t be the same. This is the way that we can exist all kind of “Discrimination”
Reflection questions
- Purpose of social
Social studies include a variety of topics such as history, law, geography, and economics. So we learn a lot by learning social studies. There are many reasons why we learn about social. The social study is an important foundation for the world we live in. So what is the purpose of social?
We know a lot of people is now living in every country. And all of us can not live only what we want. So social controls many of these people and helps them to live together.
Respect for human rights is also could be a purpose of social.
- Political Ideologies
There are various political ideologies such as Fascism, Socialism, Communism, Conservatism, and Liberalism. And they all pursue different things. Some of them pursue community and some of them seek to reduce the gap between rich and poor. Some of them pursue freedom and fair and Some of them pursue economics. Each ideology is lacking, but they continue to work hard to make society better.
- Overpopulation
Medical technology has developed tremendously from ancient times to the present. That means people can live longer and longer. Many people have lived for a long time and the babies are stillborn, So that’s why ‘Overpopulation’ happen.
Too many immigrants also caused Overpopulation. Overpopulation caused a lot of problems. Hospital won’t have enough place for babies and there won’t have enough job for people either. Most important thing is the resources will be scarce. But the world is not just overpopulation. Therefore, we need to find solutions to keep the population properly.
Current event Assignment
There was very sad thing happened recently
2 teens killed in targeted shooting in Surrey.
The two teens were found dead in Surrey on June 4th. They both were shotted and police are thinking that they were killed in a targeted shooting.
The victims are Jaskarn (Jason) Singh Jhutty, 16, and Jaskaran (Jesse) Singh Bhangal, 17, and they both lived in Surrey and they had been attended Frank Hurt Secondary. People around them said they were really good guys. The saddest thing was, the criminal didn’t catch yet, Therefore police also found two burned-out cars that could be involved in the killings. They are waiting for the witness and evidence. Their friends and family fall into sorrow.
I learned that there was a very sad event, recently. I also learned that I should be more concerned with Canadian social issues. I was a little bit afraid that teenagers were killed by someone and I hope that criminal can soon be arrested. And I do not want these incidents to repeat. It was too sad that this case was not resolved, and the fact that the victim was our age and the words of the parents were so sad.
Until now, their parents and friends will be deeply saddened and nothing will replace their hearts. I want to know exactly what happened and catch the criminals. I hope if the witness saw this news they call the police and help them to catch the criminal.
In the article, there has interviewed about their family and friends. They expressed their feeling ‘broken inside’. I was so sad when I read that.
