1) What questions did you need to research in order to create your sway?

When was einsteinium discovered?

How was einsteinium discovered?

Is einsteinium dangerous?

Who found einsteinium?

Who named einsteinium?

Is einsteinium naturally occurring?

What is einsteinium used for?

Is einsteinium used for anything?

2) What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

I learned to use Gale, the resource provided to us through the library website.

3) What was the process you used to investigate the topic and how did you verify and cite the information you found?

I documented all the info in the sway and cited them once I was finished with the individual site.

4) How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

I encountered some problems with Sway, as it would crash repeatedly. I probably could have done more research in general. While I understand the element, I feel I could know more.

Unit 1 Summary

The Pythagoras Theorem

The Pythagoras theorem is the mathematical formula used to find the hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle. In other words, it is used to find the longest side of a 90-degree triangle. The formula is the following: a squared plus b squared equals c squared. This sentence does not make that much sense on its own, but with proper context it works. “a” and “b” refer to the legs (the legs are the two sides of the triangle that are not the hypotenuse) and the “c” refers to the hypotenuse.

To further explain the concept; this equation is done by first squaring the lengths of the two legs individually. Once the legs have been squared, they are added together. If you take that result and find its square root, that will be the length of the hypotenuse.

To get a better understanding, here’s a couple examples:

First, let’s say that a = 3 and b = 4. If a (3) x a (3) = 9, and b (4) x b (4) = 16, we can add them together to get 25. 25 can then be reduced to its square root of 5, and there is your c value, the length of the hypotenuse.

For a more complicated example, we will say that a = 8 and b = 11. 8 x 8 = 64 and 11 x 11 = 121. We add those together to get 185. Now, this example is not just more difficult because it has bigger numbers, we also must estimate. While we could use a calculator, in this unit we learned to estimate square roots, so we should use that skill. If we know that 185 lies between 169 (13²) and 196. (14²) We can now estimate by placing our “guess” between those two numbers. 185 lies slightly closer to 196, so we can say it is about 13.6 or 13.7. This means that c ≈13.6.

HCE 9 – English Write

Respect

While I could have gone the rout of inclusivity as it’s included in the title, I wanted to try and look at it through the lens of respect because I thought it would reveal some ideas that were harder to see but were, in the end, more interesting. I believe this image demonstrates the theme of respect in multiple ways. The first way I observed is that the whole image seems to be showing how a lack of respect for one’s culture and way of life can lead to the greying or “whitewashing” of the culture. For example, residential schools were built primarily on the disrespect of indigenous peoples. Another way I see the theme of respect in this image is that the artist is saying that joy, tradition and culture thrive with the respect of others. It shows that the people to the left were not treated with the respect they deserved and they subsequently had the culture and tradition they held so close to their hearts taken from them. In my opinion, the artist of this image has successfully woven a story of disrespect and consequences that uses no words to express an idea often written or spoken.

I think that this image is capable of expressing multiple ideas, all of which can be found in the combination of colour, shape and gaze. In this image, we can see rows of people leading from left to right. The people on the left two thirds are desaturated and wearing plain clothing. On the right side, the people are a lot more colourful and vibrant, demonstrating the freedom that comes with one’s culture. The shapes within the image are important because the rigid lines of people make it easy to read. Those lines also lead to a sense of confinement and strict order. Lastly, the gaze of the characters are representative of the emotions they feel. On the right, we see people looking at the viewer with smiles, the farther left we look however, we see dull, emotionless gazes, enhanced by their unsmiling eyes. The main idea I see in this image is a sad and sullen message of respect, inclusivity and the importance of culture.

Grammar Video Project – “Simple, Compound and Complex Sentences”

For my grammar project I had to explain compound and complex sentences. A compound sentence is “a sentence with more than one subject or predicate.” This means that a compound sentence usually has two independent clauses. An independent clause is a series of words forming a thought or idea that has at least one subject and predicate. The subject is the topic of the sentence, and the predicate is what the subject is doing. For example, “The dog (subject) walked(predicate.)” An example of a compound sentence is like my previous example, only it has two clauses linked with a “FANBOYS” conjunction. For example, “the dog walked, and it barked.” A complex sentence is like a compound sentence, but instead of multiple independent clauses, it has a dependent clause with an independent one attached. This means the dependent clause can only make sense with the addition of an independent one. An example of this is, “When the dog walked, it started to bark.” Note how if you were given the first half of the sentence “When the dog walked”, it would feel unfinished, the sentence only makes sense when you add the last clause “When the dog walked, it started to bark.”

Test questions:

1) What is an independent clause?

  1. a) a clause that can stand on its own
  2. b) a clause that requires another clause to make sense
  3. c)a clause that can be the only one in a sentence
  4. d) a clause that can only be used once in a paragraph

2) What is a dependent clause?

  1. a) a clause that can stand on its own
  2. b) a clause that requires another clause to make sense
  3. c) a clause that can be the only one in a sentence
  4. d) a clause that can only be used once in a paragraph

3) What is a compound sentence?

  1. a) a sentence containing a single independent clause
  2. b) a sentence with no clauses
  3. c) a sentence with a dependent clause and an independent clause
  4. d) a sentence with multiple independent clauses

4) what is a complex sentence?

  1. a) a sentence containing a single independent clause
  2. b) a sentence with no clauses

Indigenous Exploration – Health

Reflection:

This project was an interesting and enlightening experience. While researching, I encountered many facts and statistics that were both interesting and disheartening. I think that while it was sad to see all these problems, it was also necessary. In my opinion, learning and understanding is one of the best ways to combat the continuation of injustice.

Because there is so much information on the topic of indigenous health, we had a lot of source material to work with. We all did individual research, compiling a list of facts and information points. We then turned the list into a colour coded script, trying to give everyone equal speaking time. The difficulty was making a script that conformed to the rules. We had a hard time getting the discussion long enough.

While making this project, we ran into an obstacle. It was that when our recording day came around, one of our group members couldn’t come to school due to circumstances outside their control. This led to us having to record on the same day the reflection was supposed to be written. That also meant that we didn’t have the microphones or recording spaces at the start. Eventually we managed to get what we needed, but it still took up a lot of our recording time. Apart from that I didn’t struggle too much on the technology side of things. I already knew how to use audacity, so it made recording easy.

Communication has always been interesting for me; at times I struggle with it and at times I excel at it. I think that one of the reasons I struggle is because I’ve always found conversations with people I don’t know slightly unpleasant. For some reason, my aversion to conversation is only really highlighted when speaking to people of my general age group. This means that when communicating what I’ve learned to a teacher, I’m able to convey the information needed. It also means that when I work in a group of students I’ve never met, it tends to get more difficult. Despite my difficulty communicating out loud, my written communication skills are where I excel. This is helpful since a lot of the work we do in school is in a written format. Finally, I also do well when communicating my learning through creative measures. I always enjoy when I have the opportunity to create something. Whether it’s a drawing, a video game or something else, I always find myself investing more effort into the project or assignment.
