Short Story Questions

1. The boys are upset because they were losing something they found important.

2. Intimidation, threats and discriminations are all used. The girls don’t change their minds.

3. A kid in the class is telling the story. She approves of the teachers methods. It is told in the third person by the kid.

4. Rural Ontario, 1950s. They mention the Toronto hockey team and beating children is still an accepted punishment in the class. They also mention the junior red cross. The conflict is person vs society.

5. The protagonists is Alma Niles. She’s what the plot focuses on.

6. The social hierarchy was shifted when they were allowed to carry the water. When the teacher sweeps dust off her desk, it provides a sense of closure and finality.
