Part 1: Cancer Story
Hi, I am cell living in the bone marrow of George, and today I’m going to tell you his story. George suffers from abnormal production of blood cells, generally leukocyte which are white blood cells. Leukaemia is caused be mutations in the CEBPA gene that is passed down within families and are present throughout George’s life in every cells in his body, but the exact way I was formed is unknown. George is in pain and is experiencing excessive sweating, pale skin, tiredness, weight loss, fever, breathlessness, frequent infections and nosebleeds. Even though I am unsure of how I got here I do know my purpose, to kill George. I am sorry George its my job.
George has started his treatment for his cancer. He started Chemotherapy, which is a drug taken to kill any cancer cells without damaging too many other good cells in the body. A stem cell transplant is rarely done but George needed it. A stem cell transplant is replacing George’s blood forming cells with new stem cells that make healthy blood cells. Radiation has also been attempted, which treats cancer by using high energy waves to kill cancer cells. These treatments have resulted in George losing weight and losing his hair. He also had a few surgeries but nothing seemed to get rid of his cancer. Right now all George does is sit in a hospital knowing that he only has little time left to live, which means my work here is almost done. As the days went on George was in more and more pain and there was no more treatments for him to undergo. He was told he only had a weeks time to live but passed away in a couple of days. My work here is done, of to my next victim…
Questions:
1. What questions did you need to research in order to create your cancer story?
What is leukaemia?, Where is it found in the body?, What causes it?, What effects does it have on the body?, Is there a cure? Is it rare?
2. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?
I used google and easy bib. Easy was new for me, and I will definitely use it again to cite my work.
3. What was the process you used to investigate the topic?
I wanted to learn more about this type of cancer and what its causes, symptoms and effects. I went deeper into my investigation on this type of cancer by asking family members and did some research. Then based the information I found to help me write my story.
4. How did you verify and cite the information you found?
I verified the information I found by looking at multiple cites to make sure it was true and each cite had the same or similar information. I cited my sources by copying and pasting the website names and then making a bibliography.
5. How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you don’t better?
The process of this assignment went very well. I wanted to make sure I understood my topic to make sure I knew what I was talking about. I think I could have researched more about how the cancer forms and more causes. Overall I think I did well on this story and I could have added a bit more detail.
