This week I learned how to convert imperial measurements to metric, and the other way around. At first I had some trouble with converting one unit to two, so cm into feet and inches, but I think now I understand.

  • First step is to put what you want to convert in a fraction over 1 so you don’t get confused, make sure to add the unit so you know what to cancel out. So if we would like to convert 1782 cm to feet and inches, we need to take 1782 cm and put it over one.
  • Next step is to make a fraction that will cancel out the cm, first we want to find out what 1782 cm is in inches and then convert it to feet and the excess will be the inches. In our example 1782 cm is over one, and there is roughly 2.54 cm in 1 inch. To get rid of the cm, you have to have one on top and one on the bottom, so we would put 1 inch over 2.54 cm.
  • Now the cm cancel out and you’re left with unit you want to end with (inches). Now you just put 1782 divided by 2.54, and you’ll get the answer to how many inches are in 1782 cm, which is roughly 701.58.
  • Now that we converted it to be inches, we still want to find out how many feet there are with the excess inches. To do this you have to put 701.58 in over 1, there are 12 inches in a foot and you want the inches to cancel out so you put 1 foot over 12 inches. Now you get 701.58 over 12, now you have to convert it into a mixed fraction, which is 58 and 5.58 twelfths. 58 shows you how many feet are in 1782 cm and the 5.58 twelfths are the inches that couldn’t make it to 1 foot, so that would be how many inches are in it.
  • Therefore: 1782 cm= 58 feet and 5.58 inches
