Float Your Boat Challenge

1). Sate the problem of this experiment

How many pennies will fit ib our boat before it sinks?

2). State your hypothesis for this experiment

If we build a boat made out of straws, tinfoil, and craft sticks. Then it will hold 50 pennies because the boat will not be that strong.

3). How many pennies did your boat hold?

Our boat will held 73 pennies.

4).  What was your thinking/ reasoning behind the design of your boat?

We thought that the deeper our boat was the more pennies it will hold. Our boat had high sides that were held up by craft sticks. Our boat also had the straws on the sides to help it float.

5) What would you keep/ change in your boat design if were to do this again

I would make your boat bigger and not as deep. The boats that covered more surface area did way better than the small deep boats

Perfect Person

If I was to describe the perfect person. I think that they would be nice, kind, caring, smart, athletic and artistic. I think that they would look like whatever they wanted to look like. They wouldn’t care what other people thought.

Technology’s Epic Story- Kevin Kelly

People achieve progress with technology through the “proactionary principle, which is: You

engage with technology. You try it out… You try to anticipate it, but after anticipating it, you

constantly asses it… and when it diverts from what you want… we fix it, but most importantly,

we relocate it… (and) find a new job for it.” -Kevin Kelly founding editor of wired magazine.

This quote is saying that technology is always changing. You use it and when it doesn’t do what

you want, you change it. It is also saying that this is how you achieve progress. That this is

always a good thing. He is saying that you should always just go with technology. Go where it

leads you. This statement is true. Our world is always changing and most of it is due to

technology. All of the advancements our world has made was because of technology. For

example our school. It wouldn’t be possible to succeed in our school without technology. Pens,

pencils, paper, tablets, and phones. If we didn’t have any of these, school would be very

difficult. Our advancements made in school were all made by technology.

Technology is everything that we have made. For one day if anyone tried to get through the day

without using it. I don’t think it would be possible. You can’t get water from the sink, you can’t

go to the grocery store to buy your food and you can’t cook the food that you do get. Not to

mention that you would have to sleep outside not in a house. Because houses are made by

technology.

It is a necessity in everyone’s lives and it is a positive thing. Every bit of technology that we

produce can be put to a something good. I’m not saying that it always is, but it can be. For

example nuclear bombs were made bad, but they figured out how to use the technology within

the bombs to give us power. Every advancement made with technology is progress. And

progress is being made every single day.

What I learned this week- FOIL polynomials

This week I learned how to FOIL.  You FOIL when you are multiplying a binomial by a binomial.

-The F in FOIL stands for Firsts

-The O in FOIL stands for outsides

-The I in FOIL stands for insides

-The L in FOIL stands for lasts

For example:
(3x-1)(x-1)

First you would multiply the firsts, so (3x)(x)

So it would be 3x^2

Then you would multiply the outsides, so (3x)(-1)

so it would be -3x

Then you would multiply the insides, so (-1)(x)

So it would equal -x

Then you would multiply the lasts, so (-1)(-1)

So it would equal 1

Your equation would look like 3x^2-3x-x+1

Now you need to simplify

3x^2-4x+1

Then your done!

What I learned this week- Trig

This week in trigonometry I learned how to find the angle in a triangle with only having two side lengths.

If this is your triangle:

First you would have to label it using Hypotenuse, opposite, and adjacent.

-Hypotenuse goes across for the right angle

-Opposite goes across from the angle your trying to find

-Adjacent goes wherever opposite doesn’t go

Then you have to use SOH CAH TOA to find the angle

In this case I would use cosine because the triangle has the side lengths adjacent and hypotenuse.

You would type this into your calculator

The answer is 62 degrees

Credit card comparison

Credit Card Comparison

Mrs. Durand

Explain/define the following terms:

Credit –

Credit is when one party lends another party money. If the second party doesn’t pay them back within the deadline. They get interest.

Credit Card –

A credit card is a card that you get from your bank. This card lends you money. The credit card usually has a limit. At the end of the month you have to pay back all of the money that you borrowed. If you can’t then you are in debt. For every month that you don’t pay back your debt there is interest. If you do pay the company back on time you usually get rewards.

Annual Fee –

An annual fee is the fee that credit card companies charge you for having the card. This can range from $15- $500.

Interest Rate –

The interest rate is when you don’t pay back the full amount of money you borrowed. The money that you still need to pay back gathers interest. The interest usually ranges from 15- 30%.

Minimum Payment –

At the end of the month you have to make a minimum payment. You don’t have to pay back the full amount every month but you do have to make a minimum payment.

Grace Period –

Is a time when no interest is charged to your credit card.

Answer the following questions.

Why would a credit card company let you borrow money?

They let you borrow money because of interest. If you don’t pay them back all of the money at the end of the month. The money gains interest. You might end up paying twice the amount of money that you started out with. They make a lot of money when they do that.

What card do you prefer and why? Explain in multiple sentences your reasoning.
I want the BMO air miles world elite mastercard. I want this card because it has the best benefits and the interest is not any different. You get air miles and cash back. It costs a lot more than the other cards but I think that it is worth it.

What card do you NOT prefer and why? Explain in multiple sentences your reasoning.
I would not want the cash back mastercard. The card is free but the benefits are not that good. I would also prefer to go on trips with my benefits, which you can do with airmiles. You can also buy other things with airmiles.

What I learned this week- Exponents lesson #1

I learned how the exponent laws:

Exponent laws are the rules you follow when you are adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing.

The first law is when you are multiplying two numbers with the same base, you add the exponents.

For example: 6^4 x 6^3 = 6^7

The second law is when your dividing two numbers with the same base. You have to divide the exponents.

For example: 6^86^4 = 6^4

The third law is when you are multiplying two numbers by the same exponent. You have to expand out the question then multiply them both by the exponent.

For example:

Then you can expand

picture-2

You can either leave it like that or keep expanding

6x6x8x8

You do the same with division

When you have two exponents one outside the bracket and one inside the bracket you multiply them.

Freedom 18 Response

When I’m eighteen I will have graduated from high school. I will be going to university. I will also have a job.
To be able to pay for university I will need to have a good paying job. I will probably end up working two jobs. In order to pay for university. If I was to work 6 hours a day 6 days a week I would be paid approximately $762.00 per month. As a second job I would be a soccer referee. I would work 3 games a week. I would make $120.00 per month. This would be a total of $882.00 a month.
My only fixed expense would be my cell phone bill. I would have a plan that cost $20.00 a month. I don’t need unlimited everything I want it. So my plan would be just needs. I could call when I needed to. I could text when I needed to. But I wouldn’t be calling and texting all the time.
My biggest variable expense would be my tuition. My tuition would cost me $500 a month. That is just paying for half. On top of that I would have to pay for going out for dinner, clothes, gifts, transit and my savings account. To keep the cost down, I would only go out for dinner once a month, I would have a budget of $20.00 a month on clothes, I wouldn’t buy that expensive gifts. I can’t really do anything about transit. I just couldn’t take any extra trips. I would out $20.00 a month away in my savings account. All of this would be approximately $635.00.
By the end of the month I would have around $227.00.
When I talked to my parents. They thought that me working full time and going to school would be unrealistic. They did not think that I would be able to work 6 hours a day and keep my grades up. They thought it would be better if I worked maybe 3 hours a day 4 days a week. This way I would only be making $684.00 a month. By the end of the month I would have a surplus of $27.00.
I think that I would be able to live this way for a few years. If I put that $27.00 into my savings account I would have enough money saved up by the end of university to do whatever I wanted.
