~Accessibility Project Challenge~

Group– Aurora, Lucy, Katie and Saanvi

Assignment– For this assignment, my group and I worked with a blind Riverside student named Molly. With her contributions, we were able to outline efficient solutions to an issue she consistently faces at Riverside.

To many, Riverside is known as a welcoming school. Though to other students like Molly (a blind freshman), her experiences provoke otherwise.

For Molly, she faces one of the biggest obstacles at Riverside; navigation. She is unable to tell what classroom she is entering and unable to get to her other classes without the aid of another.

By working with Molly, we hope to aid her accessibility around Riverside. By discussing the classes Molly will be attending next year, we were able to 3D print out the room numbers in braille and paste them onto the outside of each classroom. In addition, my group and I designed tiny hand markers that indicate when she needs to turn in the hallway.

These innovations were designed to ensure that blind people do not have to guess, but instead travel inside schools with ease.

Throughout the creation of this project, I would describe myself as the project manager. My responsibilities were to develop ideas, research, design and refine ideas, 3D print and make sure to help other group members to complete this accessibility challenge.

I believe my contribution has greatly impacted this project. This innovation can be used in numerous schools for children who are visually impaired and therefore has made me incredibly proud of my group’s impact.

Although, if I were to redo this assignment, I would make sure to improve my communication skills with my partners, as we did not clarify our roles and responsibilities. This created a few blank spaces in our action plan and created an unbalanced workload.

One of the main things I have learned from the design spirit and process is perspective. Working together allows for more ideas from various perspectives, while also making things more efficient. By working in groups, you can work with your strengths, and it provides you with a more focused workload.

Molly’s experience has given me the chance to learn many things about struggle. By working with Molly, I was able to formulate a solution through a strong design process, communication, and inquiring questions. If it were not for Molly, our project would not have as much direction and effectiveness in terms of navigation. Our project is certainly indebted to Molly.

I enjoyed the process as we were able to communicate with others and review multiple perspectives in order to fulfill specific requirements.

I have learned many things from this innovative project such as how to communicate and cooperate with others, inquire and ask good questions, manage time and outline responsibilities, and overall, how to overcome a challenge. All these skills will serve me well in the future.
