How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?
Your digital footprint can affect your future jobs, for example, Ala Buzreba who became a liberal has posted some offensive tweets when she was a teenager. The tweets have been found and she has apologized and also said that she will not be running in the election.
Another example is, there was a middle management employee working in marketing and she went to see a recruitment consultant. The very first thing she said to the man was “Your digital footprint is toxic”. She printed his digital footprint out and showed it to the man, he said “Now that I see it, it’s very embarrassing”. And of course he did not get the job.
Both Ala Buzreba and the man had regretted what they did and have learned a lot by it. They became more careful of what they do on the internet to not make the same mistake again.
What are strategies to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe?
1. Let’s think before we post! Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? And is it kind? Thinking before we take action can help us a lot, because by doing that the percentage of us regretting in the future is lower.
2. Let’s make sure our profile and posts are private! By making your account private, only people who you allow to follow you can see your updates. By making sure your posts are private, only your friends and followers can see your posts. And make sure you choose a secure password for your account so you won’t be hacked. You don’t want your personal information flying away. right?
What information did you learn that you would pass on to the other students? How would you go about telling them?
I’ve learned so much by this, and honestly, I think everything in this is really important. So I would pass on everything here to other students. I would also tell them to keep in mind that your digital footprint follows you everywhere. It might even know stuff you didn’t know about yourself. So stay alert, your digital footprint will always and forever follow you. One single thing you do might ruin your entire life. So think before you take action and give respect to others.
