Final lit circle project

A letter to Sherman Lexie

Hi, my name is Sara Hosseini and I am a grade 9 student at Riverside secondary school. I am writing this letter, because of an English assignment that we are required to do based on a novel that we read. The novel we read was actually yours, “The Absolutely True Story Of A Part Time Indian”. In my opinion, this novel was very well written, the way that you’ve mentioned all of the issues that Junior goes through is just so interesting but also very sad because of the fact that he loses so many people and is going through such a difficult time, and we get to witness all of it. The problems that Junior is having in his life are very realistic to a lot of people in the world and I think that you did a very good job portraying it. This novel really changed my view in life because I’ve gotten to know the privileges that me and a lot of people around me have, especially Caucasians. I also liked the way you showed the way that white privilege works in the real world by making Junior go to Reardon and seeing white people his age get the things that he simply could not afford or could get, because I don’t think that some people realize that white privilege very much exists and still deny it to this day despite the injustices against people of colour that are going on in the world at the moment. I also really liked the way that you portrayed Rowdy in this story. I really like his character and find him interesting because of the way that you show his life in the story and why he acts the way that he acts towards people. Also the way that you brought awareness to alcoholism and how dangerous it can be not only towards the person drinking it, but also the people around them was amazing, and I really think it is important that people are very careful and sensitive with that topic. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed reading “The Absolutely True Story Of A Part Time Indian” and would read it again for the first time if I could because I enjoy reading about realistic things in the world and this novel portrayed it really well.

Character sketch- Rowdy

Rowdy appears to be one of the main characters of “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Ellen Forney. I personally think that Rowdy is one of the most interesting characters in the book because of how many interesting personality traits he has. Rowdy is a very angry and violent kid, which always leads to him being disrespectful and getting into a lot of fights. According to Junior, who is also Rowdys best friend, Rowdys rude behaviour is mostly caused by the trauma he experiences at home, like, when Junior quoted “His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces.” (pg.12) He also tends to get into a lot of fist fights which is I’m guessing just him expressing his anger that he always holds in from having an abusive dad. He also seems to be one of those people that claim that they’re tough and don’t show emotion other than anger, like when Junior said this about him when he was telling us about Rowdy , “Rowdy would miss me, but he’d never admit that he’d miss me. He is way too tough for that kind of emotion.” (pg.12). I think that Rowdy demonstrated the “learning involves developing relationships, respecting distinct cultures, and honouring the perspective of others in our communities” AWOBK because I think that Rowdy is a very broken and sad kid dealing with family problems and he just has a very hard time dealing with making relationships work because of how stubborn he is and also, I think that people that don’t really know him assume that he is a mean person so they just don’t talk to him or try to befriend him. Overall, I think that Rowdy is a very sad and broken kid just trying to cope with his family issues by trying to act mean and tough.

silver lining

Because of this pandemic, we are all unfortunately stuck inside of our homes, bored. For my silver lining during the two weeks that I couldn’t leave the house, I did a few things, some useful and fun and some not very much. For one of my silver linings, I decided to talk about when I made a bunch of milkshakes and other weird drinks. I decided to make these drinks when I saw a random tutorial steps and ingredients on Tik Tok last week. It was very easy to make and it only included two ingredients that I already had at home. My other silver lining would be about how I downloaded Roblox and got very good at it in such little time. I made some great progress on the games and I am also proud of myself for getting so many wins in Fortnite when I downloaded it at first. I also made M&M cookies that I saw someone make on Tik Tok. They were very good and also very fun to make. I think that this pandemic is horrible and I am hoping that its over soon so everyone can get back to their normal lives. And honestly, being stuck at home for me wasn’t bad at all, yes it was very boring at times, but I figured out stuffed to do to get rid of my boredom, like, making those drinks and also just being with my family since I didn’t get to see them that much when school was in session. Overall, I had a lot of fun doing those stuff, and hopefully everything is back to normal again.

volunteering

Volunteers like you are our most important assets. We would not be able to run our facility to the high standard we do without your generous help.

Since the animals in our care are our number one concern, we do what we can to ensure that all of our volunteer efforts go to directly caring for the dogs, rather than being tied up with tasks such as answering email or the phone.

Because of this, we limit the time period during which we accept new volunteers, in order to reduce adminstrative tasks.

If you are under the age of 18, you will need to have a parent or guardian attend all volunteer training and volunteer sessions with you.

If you would prefer not to walk a dog, you can still enjoy and care for them. You can play with them, give the fluffy ones a good brushing, trim their nails, or bathe them. We occasionally have puppies that need people to hang out and play with so that they can be socialized.

PT Animal Care Expert
the volunteer work that I searched for is an animal shelter that works with animals but anyone that works there is required to be 18 years old unless your parent or guardian goes with you or signs a paper that you are experienced with animals and are a good pick for this volunteer job. you can do things as simple as, walk the dogs, trim their hairs, or just hangout or socialize with them.
the way that it could benefit my future would be that if in the future, I want to find a job that is related to working with animals like a vet assistant, they could know about the volunteer job that I did before looking for that job, and I would definitely have a better chance of getting that job since there would be proof of me having experience with working with animals.
why i’m passionate about working with animals is because my dad used to work at pet stores and places that work with animals, and i sometimes went with him when i was little and always were passionate about working wit animals but also helping them because i think that they deserve it so much and i just love animals.
the employment opportunity wouldn’t benefit my future a whole lot to be honest, but I think that I would have to start off from somewhere to get to the top so when I want to get a better job than this one in the future that pays better, I could have a lot more experience since ive done the volunteering and the employment job.
it doesn’t say a whole bunch on what you need to do to get this job in details but, some of the skills it says that you need are that you need to be outgoing (with animals and coworkers), ready to engage with any kind of customer, ready and wanting to always learn new stuff, being able to work independently etc.
it doesn’t have details about what you need to do to get this job but you need to have the skills that I just said above, you need to be over 18 etc.

All about me discriptive writing

Hi, my name is Sara. in this paragraph, I will be talking about me and a bunch of random facts about me. I am a 14 year old girl who loves to watch YouTube, go to the movies with friends, and go shopping at the mall. I attend riverside secondary school and I love coming here everyday, seeing all my friends and being able to interact with so many people, it is very interesting learning so many new things everyday. One of the random facts about me is that I have a 3 year old brother, he is very stubborn and annoying but also very adorable. I have lots of goals for the future like one of them being, travelling with my friends. Some of the places that I would really like to travel to would definitely be Los Angeles, New York, France, Italy, and I would also want to go to turkey because, I’ve spent most of my childhood there and haven’t been there in a long time so, I think that it would be very interesting to go back and visit some of the places that I used to go to everyday.

All about Brooke

For our paragraph activity, I got to know Brooke a lot better, and I’m going to tell you all about her. Brooke has a very fun and interesting personality and listens to music every chance that she gets. Brooke said that the question about life that interests her the most is, how we are created. She believes that since there are so many beliefs and opinions that different people have about this question, it makes her more interested and would like to know all about it. I also asked her about a superpower that she would have and she said, flying. the reason why she said flying is because, she thinks that flying would be a very fun, adventurous, and kind of relaxing superpower. Overall, this was a very fun and interesting activity to do and I am glad that we did it because, I got to learn a lot more about Brooke and how amazing she is.

How Things Work- LED bulb

  1. what is your technology trying to solve? what is its purpose?

an led light is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. infrared LED’s are used in remote control circuit, such as those used with a wide variety of consumer electronics. when a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. LED’s burn light 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs. LED’s work by passing an electric current through a microchip, which causes tiny light emitting diodes to illuminate. 95% of the energy in LED’s is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat.

2.  form and function (How does it work?): What are its main parts and what do the parts do? How does it use or generate electricity?

so some of the main parts of an led light that i found from researching are: the lens, the E26 base, and the led driver. the lens directs light from the centre of the source to the reflector, which then sends out a controlled beam in whichever direction it is designed to. The E26 base is any bulb or lamp that utilizes the E26 cap or base for mounting and electric contact. you can always recognize any E26 bulb by looking at the bottom, or non-light emitting side of the bulb. And lastly, an LED driver is a self contained power supply which regulates the power required for an led or array of led’s. the light emitting diodes are low energy, lighting devices with a long lifespan and low energy consumption, hence the requirement for specialized power supplies. there are typed of led drivers, led drivers are either used externally or internally. internal led lights are commonly used in domestic LED bulbs to make it easy when replacing the bulbs. external led drivers are housed separately from the LED’s and usually used for applications such as outdoor, commercial, roadways lighting. these types of lights require separate drivers which are easier and cheaper to replace. most of the LED bulb failures are due to the failure in the driver, and it is easier to replaces or repair the external driver compared to the internal driver.

evaluate:

a) what are the strengths and weaknesses of your technology?

the weaknesses of an led bulb is due to the low power of a single LED, its luminance remains fairly low. more LED’s are required to be connected in parallel, such as automobile backlights. more LED’s lead to higher cost, although the cost of a single led is not high.

the strengths that an led bulb would be the long light lifespan of it. easily the most significant advantage of LED’s when compared to traditional lighting is the long lifespan. the average led light lasts 50,000 operating hours to 100,000 operating hours or more. that is 2-4 times as long as most fluorescent metal halide, and even sodium vapor lights. it is more than 40 times as long as the average incandescent bulb. another strength of an led bulb would be the energy effidiecny. led’s consume very low amount of power the statics to look for when comparing the energy efficiency of different lighting solutions are called by one of the two tems: luminous efficacy or useful lumens. these two items essentially describe the amount of light emitted per unit of power (watts) consumed by the bulb.

b) In your opinion, is it a satisfactory solution to the problem it is trying to solve?

in my opinion, yes it is a really good solution because of its energy efficiency because it is 80% more efficient than other light bulbs. unlike other energy-effficient typed of lighting, an led bulb doesnt emit a polluting radiation so it doesnt cause a health hazard. i also really like the fact that they have a really long lifespan and you can use them however long you want and they wont burn up like normal light bulbs do too often.

A Fresh look at the periodic table

explanation

My partner and I organized our new periodic table by making two big  hexagon shapes and make little parallelogram shapes inside of the two hexagons. we arranged the elements on our new periodic table by putting the metals and the non-metals in the same hexagon, but separated them by making them different colours, the metals are orange and the non-metals are yellow. We also separated the families on the first hexagon, so the alkali metals and the alkaline earth metals are orange since they’re metals, and the halogens and the noble gases are yellow because theyre non-metals.

another way we arranged them is, we put the Transition metals/basic metals in a different hexagon, coloured them all blue and went in order of atomic number. and also we put the hydrogen element separate from all the other elements in a triangle shape in the second hexagon paper.

the 6 D’s

Define and Discover:

We are trying to think about ways to make a new periodic table that would be more visually appealing ,people having  better understanding of it, and just re-creating it and making it look more creative and colourful.

  • what could we change up without messing up and still having people understand it?
  • what should be kept the same for sure?
  • how many patterns, shapes, and colours will we use?

Dream:

What information does the periodic table tell you?

the periodic table tells us about the different families, the number of protons, atomic number, atomic mass, neutrons and electrons in each element, as well as the ionic charges of each element. it also tells us about how each element is either solid, liquid, gases, non-metals, and metals.

How could you arrange It differently based on its chemical and physical reaction?

  • we could arrange them by their atomic numbers highest to lowest
  • we could arrange it by putting them in order of their families
  • we could arrange them by their ionic charges negative to positive
  • we could arrange it by separating the metals and non-metals

what different shapes could be used?

  • could have the metals in one shape and the non-metals a different shape
  • we could have the same shape for the alkali metals and the alkaline earth metals and a different shape for the halogens and the noble gases

How can you use colour?

  • we could colour the alkali metals and the alkaline earth metals the same and colour the halogens and the noble gases different

  • we could use the same colour for the metals and a different colour for the non metals
  • we could colour is based on its atomic mass

Design:

What is your plan?

our plan is to make two hexagons, divide the first one into half an arrange it by splitting the metals and the non-metals, having a different colour for metals and a different colour for non-metals. put the names of the families beside the elements, put the transition metals in the second hexagon, colour them blue and putting them in order by their atomic numbers.

Deliver:

My partner and I organized our new periodic table by making two big  hexagon shapes and made little parallelogram shapes inside of the two hexagons. we arranged the elements on our new periodic table by putting the metals and the non-metals in the same hexagon, but separated them by making them different colours, the metals are orange and the non-metals are yellow. Debrief:

there are many ways we could’ve improved our plan, but one of the biggest improvements we could’ve made was probably using our time wisely. we spent way too much time thinking about planning the whole thing instead of just committing into starting it and so now our whole project is overdue and we’ve had to rush it and get it done so we were stressed and not relaxed at all while doing this last minute.

another way we could’ve improved our plan would be doing the final copy better. it did take us a long time doing it last minute, but we still could’ve done a better job on the final copy. but overall i’m very proud of what we created and how we actually committed into doing this even though it was very last minute work and stressful for the both of us.

smart goal reflection

what was your goal?

my goal was to not turn my light on in my room for a week. I used my little nightlight that works with battery and had to use my phone flashlight sometimes because my nightlight doesn’t give out much light but other than that, I pretty much lived in the dark for a bit.

did you achieve it? how or how not?

yes, I achieved my goal. I achieved it by again, using my little nightlight and sometimes my phone flashlight and honestly, sometimes It would be difficult when I needed to for example get something from my drawers or my closet because it was very dark obviously and I couldn’t see properly and clearly.

what was the most challenging part about achieving your goal?

the most challenging part about achieving my goal was probably, trying to see stuff in the dark or when I wanted to grab something that I needed like my phone or my Chapstick etc. and sometimes trying to do my homework and couldn’t really see what I was doing but other than that, I actually like the dark and my room is usually dark or at least half dark because very bright places hurt my eyes and then my head starts to hurt so, I actually quite enjoyed trying to do this goal because it wasn’t much different form my everyday life.

what would you try doing differently next time?

I would probably try and not turn the light on even for the shortest amount of time that I did last week and ONLY used my flashlight and nightlight for everything.

will you continue with this type of goal? if you do, explain what you will do. if not, explain why you are satisfied with where you’re at.

yes, I would definitely continue with this goal because it is less use of electricity and also because it isn’t too much of a challenge for me since I actually kind of enjoy being and living in dark places and don’t like rooms with too much light in them.

digital footprint

  1. how might your digital footprint affect your future? give at least two example

1. an example of how your digital footprint can affect your future is socials media. when you were younger like 15 or 17 for example, your brain is still developing and you do and say a bunch of dumb stuff that you shouldn’t. so an example of why that could affect your future is, if you for example don’t like a certain person in your teenage years or they’ve done something to you or one of your friends and you want to get back at them, you might’ve wrote something bad or disrespectful like maybe something racist about them on the internet so now your disrespectful words will always stay on the internet. and for example now if you want to get a job and applied for it, the person that is considering to hire you could easily search your name up and see those disrespectful comments that you wrote and change their mind about hiring you.

Person Holding Iphone Showing Social Networks Folder

picture cr: tracy le blanc

2. another example would be like the opposite of example number 1. so this example would be like doing something good, important and helpful to others, like for example volunteering for something with a good cause like helping people/animals or even doing bigger and better things than just volunteering and maybe you will end up on the news or social media for doing something good and positive and in the future your opportunities of getting a job or a career will be a lot bigger.

Group of People Holding Arms

picture cr: Pixaboy

2) describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

  1. a strategy that you can use to keep your digital footprint safe is to make sure to look over a tweet/video/comment etc. before posting it because it could have something in it that might offend some of the people that read/watch it.

Man Wearing Gray Suit Besides Woman

picture cr: Jopwell

2. another strategy would be related to the first one, so if you’re not sure that the thing you’re about to post could possibly offend or upset someone, you could always ask someone like your parents, a friend or maybe even a teacher to look over it for you and double check.

3. another strategy would be not posting rude and disrespectful comments on the internet, so always write kind and positive stuff online.

3) what information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? how would you go about telling them?

Footprint on Sand

picture cr: Elviss Railijs Bitāns

something important that I’ve learned is that your digital footprint could actually be very important in your future and especially in your future opportunities like getting a job because your boss could just search your name up and see if you’re fit for a job and what your background is and if you’re not fit and they find bad things written about you or find the disrespectful things that you’ve written on the internet that is now public, then finding a job might be very difficult in the future. and I would go by telling other students is, maybe if I see them posting something that shouldn’t be posted or is somehow disrespectful, i could maybe tell them so they could take it down before more people see their post.
