Character sketch- Rowdy

Rowdy appears to be one of the main characters of “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Ellen Forney. I personally think that Rowdy is one of the most interesting characters in the book because of how many interesting personality traits he has. Rowdy is a very angry and violent kid, which always leads to him being disrespectful and getting into a lot of fights. According to Junior, who is also Rowdys best friend, Rowdys rude behaviour is mostly caused by the trauma he experiences at home, like, when Junior quoted “His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces.” (pg.12) He also tends to get into a lot of fist fights which is I’m guessing just him expressing his anger that he always holds in from having an abusive dad. He also seems to be one of those people that claim that they’re tough and don’t show emotion other than anger, like when Junior said this about him when he was telling us about Rowdy , “Rowdy would miss me, but he’d never admit that he’d miss me. He is way too tough for that kind of emotion.” (pg.12). I think that Rowdy demonstrated the “learning involves developing relationships, respecting distinct cultures, and honouring the perspective of others in our communities” AWOBK because I think that Rowdy is a very broken and sad kid dealing with family problems and he just has a very hard time dealing with making relationships work because of how stubborn he is and also, I think that people that don’t really know him assume that he is a mean person so they just don’t talk to him or try to befriend him. Overall, I think that Rowdy is a very sad and broken kid just trying to cope with his family issues by trying to act mean and tough.
