We learned about examples of Canadian discrimination between 1900-1914 in class last week. Asian was discriminated by Canadian. Also, black people was discriminated. To learn about discrimination is important before learning about the WWI, because each country have alliances. If A country discriminate B country, then C country will back up A country. Also D country will back up C country. It could cause the war. The WWI began 1914, because Servia nationalist killed Austria Hungary Archduke Ferdinand. Canada was British’s colony, so Canada had to participate automatically if British participate into the war. As Canada participated into the war, Canada developed quite a bit. Discrimination part was hard to understand for me, because I have never heard about that. However, the WWI part was not hard to understand for me. I have heard about WWI in Korea and last year.
You’re on the right track here. With significance, you can think about why we need to understand these events in history. With discrimination, it shows us how far Canada has come and when most people say we learn from our mistakes in history, I think looking at discrimination in the past is a good example of learning from our mistakes.
For the war, you might generalize it to conflicts. We see that there are common themes that lead to conflicts, militarism is pretty straightforward, and the same with imperialism. Alliance might but they also tend to protect the peace too. But nationalism seems to be a common theme that causes conflict. Anytime a country controls other cultures, people aren’t happy and conflict begins.
