“Lord of the Flies” – Island Description

(These are the quotes that described the jungle.)

1) The jungle

-“All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat.”

2)Beach

-The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralph’s left the perspectives of palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity; and always, almost visible, was the heat.

3)Scar

Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar.

4)The lagoon

Ralph disentangled himself cautiously and stole away through the branches. In a few seconds the fat boy’s grunts were behind him and he was hurrying toward the screen that still lay between him and the lagoon.

Capital Punishment in “Two Fishermen”

-P1: Write a brief history about what capital punishment is and its history in Canada. Referencing the short story “Two Fishermen” discuss how if the story was based in Canada when it might have taken place on your knowledge of capital punishment.

About one-third of the countries in the world have laws that allow the capital punishment, but also have some countries abolished the capital punishment. In pre-Confederation Canada, hundreds of criminal offences were punishable by death. Murder remained a capital crime until 1998, when Canada completely abolished the death penalty.

If “Two Fishermen” happens in Canada, and is happened after 1998 when Canada completely abolished the death penalty, Thomas Delaney would not sentence to death.

-P2: Also, discuss your opinion on whether Thomas Delaney should have been killed for his actions in defending his wife. Come up with an argument and three reasons why or why not he should have been killed.

Thomas Delaney should not be killed for his actions. Matthew Reinhart was molesting Thomas Delaney’s wife and that’s when Thomas Delaney killed him. First, his action was justifiable defense. He saw that his wife’ life was in danger, so he killed Matthew Reinhart so that he can protect his wife. Second, Thomas is not a threat to society, he didn’t kill a person for blood lust. Especially, Matthew was a disgusting rapist. Finally, when the imperfection of the law and government can not protect and help the people, people were very helpless, can only be relied on themselves through their own way. Law is inanimate but humanly is emotional, the law must always be bundled with human.
