Math 10 – Week 6

Something I learned this week was multiplying polynomials. When multiplying polynomials together, there are multiple ways to do it. Area models, distributive property, and FOIL.

Area Model:

Lay out your polynomials on the top and side of a square or rectangle and draw lines depending on how much terms are placed. Multiply going sideways and down until all the spaces are filled. You then add all like terms together.

Ex. (2x + 10) \cdot (x^2 - 3)

2x^3 + 10x^2 - 6x - 30

 

Distributive Property:

Multiply all terms from the first polynomial with all the terms of the following polynomials. Add all like terms together.

Ex. (3x - 5) \cdot (x - 2)

3x(x - 2) + -5(x - 2)                                                                                               = 3x^2 - 6x -5x +10                                                                                       = 3x^2 -11x +10

FOIL (only works when multiplying binomials):

Stands for First, Outside, Inside, Last. First tells you to multiply the first term of both binomials . Outside tells you to multiply the 2 outside terms (first term of the first binomial and the last term of the second binomial). Inside tells you to multiply the terms on the inside (second term of the first binomial and the first term of the second binomial). Last tells you to multiply the last term of each binomial (second term of both binomials). Add all like terms together.

Ex. (x^2 + 6) \cdot (4^4 + 3)

(x^2 \cdot 4^4) + (x^2 \cdot 3) + (6 \cdot 4^4) + (6 \cdot 3)                      = 4x^6 + 3x^2 + 24^4 + 18
