Assimilation vs. Inclusivity by unknown artist

  1. What do I see when I look at this image?

When I look at this image, I see on 1 half, a group of sad colourless native Americans in residential school uniformand as it fades to the other halfI see a group of colourful native Americans smiling wearing cultural outfits.

  1. How does it make me feel? (first impressions, lingering feelings after)

My first impression of this picture was that it was trying to express that native Americans can’t be happy if you strip their culture and force them to be “white”. After I observed this image, I realized that the kids in grey were wearing residential school uniforms. Noticing this, I also see that only the people in colour are wearing colourful outfits of native American heritage. This makes me feel glad that I’m not part of a race that has been oppressed on and that I’m not a part of a family that likes to oppress others.

  1. What does the image/picture seem to be trying to say? (What do you think the owner/author is trying to say to you?)

What I think this picture is trying to say is that people can’t be happy if you take away their culture push yours onto them. Culture, especially for native Americans, so taking away their culture would be the same as taking away their happiness.
