A Soldier’s Wife

Dear Archie Augustine

As I am writing this letter I am sitting underneath the tree where we sat together and you asked me to marry you. It saddens me to not see you beside me, but I know that one day we’ll be back together. It was a great surprise and I knew that your were the one ever since I first met you. Our son has been doing very well in school lately, he’s been getting good grades and making new friends. I’ve been really busy lately with the farming in the morning and being a nurse at night. Life hasn’t been the same without you the government has changed a lot ever since you left. I am very thankful that Canada has been providing you soldiers with ammunition and new boots . Since we have been giving you guys food and new equipment, the taxes and costs have gone up. A lot of people are not happy because the costs have gone up, but are wages have stayed the same. Working at the hospital has been very stressful, people have been getting injured and they keep complaining about the Measures Act. The Measures Act gave the government the right to do anything that they think is necessary. If they suspect anyone of being an enemy they can imprison or deport them. There’s also a censorship which means that they could look through are mail before it’s even sent. Women are starting to get more involved now. At the next election I am going to be voting for the first time. I’m so excited because I finally get to be a part of something meaningful and usually the men only vote. Please come home soon, Leo and I talk about you all the time and his only wish is for you to be safe and come home. We wish you the best and I love with all my heart.
