What I Have Done
This half of the semester I have been an active member of the Tech Team. I have been involved in many initiatives and I have completed many tasks within them. I volunteer at the wave almost every day of the week during my spare block. I help problem-solve wifi issues, software problems, one drive synching, and more. I have learned how to fix a variety of computer problems on different types of computers which has definitely expanded my knowledge in technology. Aside from the wave, as a member of the social media team as well, I have been continuing to post on the Riverside Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook along with link tree and televisions. I have also taken on the role of being the leadership-tech team coordinator and within that, I have so far made 22 posts for the advertisement of events happening all around the school. This is something I enjoy doing very much because last year it was one of my goals to further combine my leadership and teach team responsibilities to reach a larger target. Doing this has given me more communication skills with different teachers, as well as graphic creating skills, as I’ve had to do most posts on a time crunch. In addition to that, I have created some elements for different school-wide projects such as a voting system for the pumpkin competition and the PowerP
oint for STREAM as well as presenting it. Small difficulties when working for technology are inevitable, however, one of the most challenging projects was the pumpkin competition voting form. I had created an easily accessible form, allowing for the whole school to vote, however, the site that I chose had a response limit. It was stressful at first to have to fix it quite fast, but I was able to come up with a different system that allowed for great results. Next time it would be a great idea to do a little more research on the specific software I was using. As for the PowerPoint, I made on apps that would be useful for students at our school, I learned a lot myself on how to talk and write about stuff I didn’t know too much about. With that saying, I also learned about a couple of new apps that would be useful for future tech projects. Presenting it was also scary at first as our STREAM classes were fairly new and I hadn’t gotten too comfortable with them yet, but I think it helped with the public speaking nerves that seem to return after taking a break from talking in front of a large crowds. In conclusion, I am happy with my contributions this quarter and I am excited to learn more things and find new ways to help.
What Can We Do Better
I definitely think that in the past there has been a disconnection with more so the students than the teachers in terms of not wanting to use the wave or having trouble with technology. This could have been because of the COVID schedule, the dynamic or exhaustion it caused last year. This year I feel as if things have changed. I am not entirely sure if there is anything as of now that we need to improve on, but I think that compared to last year we as a school have improved a lot. I have been getting many more people coming down to the wave and asking for help. I have also seen that it is not just those in grade nine who are coming down. Furthermore, I think that the location of the wave has improved the accessibility to the students as they can see us as soon as they walk in. It is quite refreshing to see more and more people coming in who are comfortable with asking other students for help and I think that if we are able to continue to establish proper communication with the students that even more people will be able to use our service too. As for our staff, I think that simply letting them know we are there to help with anything they need at any given time will help reassure them of the support we offer at Riverside.
