Everything I Know About Fractions

  1. Compare fractions – To compare fractions I first make the denominators common by multiplying each side by the number on the opposite side. Then i can compare their sizes by using a number line or put them in decimals depending how complex the comparison is. EX: See media
  2. Order fractions from least to greatest – The best way overall to find the answer to these questions is put them into decimals just because decimals are like perecents and their easy to manage. It easily sorts the numbers out especially when you make them all the same denominator by using steps in number 1. EX: See media
  3. Change a mixed fraction to an improper – Multiply the denominator by the whole number on the left side once. Then add the remaining digits that are found on the numerator into the number. You will end up with a bigger number as the numerator and a smaller number as the denominator. EX: See media
  4. Change an improper fraction to a mixed fraction – Divide the numerator by the denominator to find the nearest whole number. Once you get the whole number put it on the left of the equation then add the remaining amount to the numerator. If it divides evenly leave the answer whole. EX: See media
  5. Add and subtract fractions – Multiply each of the sides by the opposite denominator. After finding a common denominator for both fractions, either add or subtract the top numbers to find the numerator (depending on the question). EX: See media
  6. Multiply Fractions – Find the common denominator by multiplying both denominators by the opposite sides. Then multiply the numerators ad reduce (if needed) to get the answer. EX: See media
  7. Divide fractions – First flip the second fraction so the denominator is on top and the numerator is on the bottom. Then follow the same procedure to multiply the fractions (in #7) to get the answer. EX: See media
  8. Apply the order of operations with fractions – First and foremost follow the procedure BEDMAS for an accurate answer. You want to deal with any fractions inside the brackets prior to anything else in the equation. Then go down the list and apply any division and multiplication included in fractions first. Then apply any addition and subtraction last.(See media)
