Characterization (3D) – “Samneric”

Quotes of Samneric:

  1. “They were twins, and the eye was shocked and incredulous at such cheery duplication. They breathed
together, they grinned together, they were chunky and vital” (Golding 23 – Ebook). This quote illustrates how the twins Sam and Eric are almost completely alike and complete each other. They talked and acted the same way, showing a close bond that almost seems like a mental connection. Because they are twins, they most likely either look alike or are completely identical.
  2. “Some of the boys wore black caps but otherwise they were almost naked. They lifted sticks in the air together whenever they came to an easy patch. They were chanting, something to do with the bundle that the errant twins carried so carefully” (Golding 96 – Ebook). They wore black caps and were almost naked. Had minimum clothing, most likely no shirt however wearing rugged shorts.
  3. “Behind Jack walked the twins, carrying a great stake on their shoulders. The gutted carcass of a pig swung from the stake, swinging heavily as the twins toiled over the uneven ground” (Golding 96 – Ebook). This quote shows they are strong enough to hold up together a full sized wild pig and having the endurance to carry it across the island.
  4. Ralph pointed fearfully at Eric’s face, which was striped with scars where the bushes had torn him” (Golding 143 – Ebook).
  5. “The twins nodded like one boy” (Golding 166 – Ebook). Quote shows Unity.
  6. “The twins came, dragging a great log and grinning in their triumph. They dumped the log among the embers so that sparks flew” (Golding 189 – Ebook). Quote shows exceptional strength. Twins are probably tall and built well in body structure.
  7. “The twins checked a moment, then walked on. ‘They’re going to bathe, Ralph.’” (Golding 226 – Ebook). This quote shows that they are most likely very dirty and must bath to clean off some of the muk that accumulated when searching for firewood and hunting with Jack.
  8. “Eric looked down at him through a mask of dried blood” (Golding 243 – Ebook). Covered in blood on their face; dirty.
  9. The twins lay hidden behind the tribe and the anonymous devils’ faces swarmed across the neck. (Golding 261 – Ebook). The twins hide behind the tribe.
  10. “The afternoon sun slanted in from the other side of the platform and most of the children, feeling too late the smart of sunburn, had put their clothes on” (Golding 43 – Ebook). This quote illustrates that all the boys present on the island are experiencing sun burns from prolonged exposure
  11. “Jack crouched with his face a few inches away from this clue, then stared forward into the semi-darkness of the undergrowth. His sandy hair, considerably longer than it had been when they dropped in, was lighter now; and his bare back was a mass of dark freckles and peeling sunburn” (Golding 66 – Ebook). Although this quote explains characteristics of Jack, it is highly likely all the other boys are experiencing peeling of their skin due to sun damage as well as long, wet, oily hair full of sand, and back full of dark freckles.

Samneric is a nickname given to twin boys Sam and Eric by Jack. They were given that name because they are almost completely identical in not only physical appearance but also in thought, and their actions. Throughout the story, us, the reader learns that all the boys on the island are almost completely naked with the exception of shorts and the same goes for Samneric. An assumption one can make regarding samneric is that they are most likely more larger, stronger, and more rugged then the other boys proven by their combined ability to lift and carry a dead adult wild pig across the island. Their time on the island resulted in poor hygiene (dirty, muddy, bloody clothing) and  leaving scars throughout their body. The two boys most likely also contain sunburns and damaged skin from a lack of protection as well as damaged hair (dry, grainy, sandy).
