For take your kid to work day I was able to go with my mum. My mum and dad work at the same place but in different departments, so it would not have mattered which parent I would be attending to with. Although my dad took the week of work to have a small at home vacation because he had a lot of extra overtime he hadn’t used. So, he thought he would take a break from work to go fishing. Anyways, when I went with my mum to her department we went outside first because she works in parks. We drove around for a while and checked everything out and she explained to me a few things I did not know about her work already. I never knew this but when your parent works with the city the city creates a agenda for all the workers kids that are coming that day to show them all the departments and all the jobs they could go into in the future if we would ever want to go to work for the city. My mum was the driver for the three kids that were taking the tour with the city so I was with her all day which was nice. I am already in their office quite a bit because sometimes I will go there after school and wait with my dad till he gets of work and we go home. So I know quite a few people working there and they know me too.

After my mum showed me around a bit the three kids went to go with a man named Marco, I already knew who Marco was because we see each other in the office sometimes when I’m there and my dad goes hunting with him. Marco then took us around the main area where all the materials are and most of the equipment like garbage trucks and tractors. After we saw all those and got a few descriptions on what they do we moved on and went to the fire department there. The fire department was probably my favorite and we got to go a lot of cool stuff t

here, such as, we got to use the fire hose and spray a building which was entertaining, then we go to use these metal cutters and chopped up a car with this heavy little machine. My favorite part was when a fire fighter gave me a sledge hammer and let me smash a car and all the windows.

The third place we went was the city hall. In city hall we went to HR and met a few people in that area and they explained what they do and what people they deal with in HR. Then we went down through all the departments in that area and spoke to almost every one and what their position is in the city. Also right before we went to city hall we went to a small art gallery that is managed by the city and is directly beside city hall. After talking to all these people we went up to the mayor’s office with a woman from HR named Hannah and we got to meet our mayor which I though

t was pretty cool.

When we went back to the main office we ordered pizza and got free lunch and pop with it. We talked to a few other workers over pizza on how they like their jobs and that we might want to do when we have to get a job. The tow guys I was with knew exactly what they want to be later in life, but I had no idea, and we got asked that question a lot throughout the day. After the free pizza lunch we went down to the rec center and talked to a few people about how the rest of the rec center is going to be laid out and built. We walked around and saw a few area most people aren’t aloud to see because it is under construction, but the place looks pretty nice. Our final stop was at the small police department over by that 7-11 near the rec center and we talked to a woman named Candice. She was a nice woman and told us about some of the things the police department does for the city and what programs they have for citizens in Port Coquitlam.

By the end of the day I had learned a lot and met a lot of people. It was a good experience and I’m glad my parents work at the city. Maybe I’ll decide to work in one of the city departments later in life when I get out of school.
