The War Between The Classes

As a human species, we are creatures who have the tendency to form an opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case at any time about anything. To prejudge someone usually refers to making judgments toward people or a person because of gender, social class, age, disability, religion, race, language, nationality, or other personal characteristics. While these may sometimes be positive judgments, they are in most cases a negative evaluation of another person based on their perceived features. Miklowitz shows various examples of prejudice in her novel, “The War Between Classes.” It is an excellent example that shows the prejudice that characters have about race, gender, and social classes. Amy’s daily conversations with her friends, Amy’s family structure, and her feelings towards her relationship with Adam are the best examples of prejudice in the novel.

There are many examples of prejudice about race in the conversations of Amy’s friend, which explains the stereotypes about social life, structure, and relationships between students in the book. People care about skin about more they care about the abilities and who they really are. “My father was a Vietnam hero. But when he got out of the service, he couldn’t get a job. Because he was black”, Gwen-one of Amy’s friends- clearly tells the reason why her father got unemployed only because of his skin color. As a reality from the book, employers get beaten by their prejudices and decide by not backgrounds but skin colors. Besides even the way students talk to one another shows how discriminative they can be. When Justin says, “Sure do, enchilada. Buzz of” to his friends, he sure is offensive about his race and hurts him. “I know why the ethnic groups. It’s because there’s safety in your own, especially when society separates people into “them” and “us”.” What Adam says is clarifies the reality of the people who are being judged their race, region and ethnic group and how that prejudices isolate them in the society. The conversations between students are enough to see the reality of the separation and isolation in the society structure, different and obsessive behaviors caused by the prejudices people have.

Amy’s parents’ behaviors against Adam and Sue are one of the biggest evidence to explain how prejudices about their race affect opinions in society. Amy’s family doesn’t trust Adam because he is not a Japanese boy. At the beginning of the book, when Amy wants to go out with Adam, her family is not happy about it as they find Adam unreliable not because of they now him but he is white. “ A Japanese boy would have had proper”, also they are comparing Adam with a Japanese boy- who was raised with the same culture as they do- to convince Amy that a Japanese boyfriend would have been better for her. Besides that, they have the same stereotyped vision towards Sue their sister in law too because she is white as Adam. “Papa had not seen Hideo for nearly a year because Hideo had married with a “white girl” without his consent”; Amy mentions how her family reacted the marriage between Sue and Hideo in a mad way. In spite their bad behaviors, Sue is always respectful to them and she thinks that the baby will unite them together. “ It’s the only way that they really accept me,” Sue says about the baby since she knows there are no others ways that they can accept her with the appearance she has. Amy’s parents judge Adam and Sue by their appearances, their prejudices about their race don’t give them a chance to know them better therefore they can’t accept them to their families.

Moreover, it is possible to see the effects prejudices, stereotypes about gender and race in Amy and Adam’s relationship. Amy is never confident about herself because she actually cares about the skin color and ethnic group that people have, an outcome of being raised by parents who think the same. She is feeling inadequate towards Adam that’s why she appreciates being a blue-Tec especially being in an upper class than Adam. On the other hand, Adam totally judges people by who they are. He always tries to behave people as best as he can. After the beauty consent, he says Amy “I don’t know how to treat you anymore. I have been very awful sexist” because he gets a chance to feel the pressure that girls have about the beauty of their feature, how hurt would a girl be after being criticized by their body so he apologizes from Amy. That’s way the different race between them is not a problem for Adam to continue their relationships but Amy is over thinking about the different ethnic groups that they belong to. Unlike Adam, Amy has prejudices about the contribution of two different races and it influences her thoughts about their relationship.

“The War Between The Classes” challenges readers to examine their own relationship to different levels of society and show the prejudices that they have about race and ethnic groups. A quote from the end of the book is enough to explain the way Amy, her friends, and her family behave toward a person who is from a different race or how they feel while they are with them with a cause of their prejudices, “ How it is in real life, they look at skin color, or facial features, or listen accents, or judge others by the way they dress not by the kind of people they are”. Miklowitz accomplished to make the reader think about prejudices they have by introducing social issues and giving specific examples from Amy’s daily life.
