Build a Better Mousetrap Assignment

Group: Me, Alivia, Jessica

DEFINE

The challenge for this assignment was to design and build a humane mousetrap using a microbit. We’re doing this to help deal with the mouse problem in the school without killing them in violent ways.

DREAM

We knew from the start that the first thing we wanted to do was to make a motion sensor circuit, and then go from there. We all agreed that there should be food inside the box to attract the mice, so we researched what kind of food they like. When we finished the circuit, we were stuck because we wanted to make a box with a closing door, and connect it to the motion sensor, but we didn’t know how to execute the idea. We brainstormed different designs, and eventually, we decided to attach a thin string to the cardboard door, so that it stays open until the string is cut. We added magnets to the door and to the bottom of the box to weigh it down and close quickly. One of us had the idea to make an automatic fan circuit that can cut the string when noise is made by the motion detector, closing the door.

We added breathing holes on the box, so that the mice can have enough air from the inside,

DELIVER

We were able to make the circuit for the fan, but we didn’t have enough time to code the microbit on the computer and attach it to the mouse trap. The second picture is what the coding would have looked like.

When we finished the box, the final step was to add breathing holes on the box, so that the mice can have air from the inside.

Even though we didn’t finish attaching the automatic fan circuit, the design was done and we think it would work well if made properly.

DEBRIEF

In doing this assignment, we were able to think creatively, brainstorm and work together while sharing our ideas. I’m also glad this project taught us more about how microbits and circuits work, and I have a better understanding now.

  1. Very good explanation of how you used the solution fluency to address a problem important to you. Great work creating a solution to the issue of mice infestation. You included very effective media showing what your solution looks like. Awesome job. How could the knowledge you gained with this approach help you in the future?
