Week 2 in Math 10 – prime factorization

This week in math 10 I learned numerous ways to find the prime factors of numbers. My favorite way is the division tables. I think it’s more organized and similaire to long division so int was easier for me to understand.

ex: 2 /1368 | 2 / 268 |  2 134 |  67

= 2 x 2 x 2 x 67

Whirligig novel Instagram assignment

The novel, “Whirligig” by Paul Fleischman is about a boy named Brent who goes on a journey across America after a fatal car accident in which a girl named Lea passed away. On his journey his personality grows, and he really finds himself. This novel explores interconnectedness, the hero’s journey, unseen forces, restorative justice, and balance. In my DMs of this assignment, I tended to focus more Brent’s journey, how far he had come since the beginning of the book to how he is now. However, I did make references to balance, interconnectedness and how Brent’s whirligig’s may have affected others. In the DMs, Stephanie tells Brent how she appreciates the whirligig because it brought she and her boyfriend together and opened up her mind to new things. I also mentioned self-identity and how Brent’s interests were truly his. At the end of the story, Brent mentioned how he wanted to build a whirligig in every state. My most recent post was of the kickoff of his quest, a Pelican whirligig in Oregon. Brent’s post was fun to make because I got to be creative. Trying to imagine what sixteen almost seventeen ‘try hard’ boy would sound like in an Instagram caption was challenging. I had to think critically because I had to write something that was overconfident, slightly insecure, without being silly. This was not easy and took a bit of time to think about. Although it was difficult, it was fascinating to see the difference in the captions from his first post about the new BMW Z1 to his first whirligig on his big journey. In all, the story gives a great perspective on personality growth and I overall enjoyed the project.

Energy Fluency assignment

To the Honourable George Heyman

Hi, I’m a student from Riverside secondary school. Recently I have done some research on the Squamish nexen plant that closed down just over twenty years ago.  I found the information fascinating and a bit disturbing. The goal of the Squamish nexen plant was to extract mercury from the land and waterfronts do make pulp for the paper industry. In doing so, they tore up and took over 5 kilometers of lagoons and a lot of shorelines to extract mercury. They used mercury to manufacture mercury-cell technology that helped make caustic acid and chlorine with was then used to make pulp for the paper industry. The mercury quickly contaminated the area, and it became a hazardous environment for life. I am glad that it is currently shut down, but I do wonder why it was running for so long? And if you were thinking of bringing it back? I do hope that you do not. Wishing you success in your cause.

Ask

Finding good guiding questions for this topic was hard because the Squamish nexen plant was up and running twenty years ago so I could not compare anything to the future. I was able to come up with, What would the canada look like if we still used the Squamish nexen plant, but besides that it was hard to think of anything else. So I mainly stuck to facts. one of my questions was what is the Squamish nexen plant, because I had never even heard of it.

Acquire

Gathering information was a bit of a struggle. Because the Squamish nexen plant was long ago, and quite specific I was very limited to my options. I was able to use google, and one article from gale engage. I got pictures from pexels and flickr which turned out great. I tried using topic finder and world book advanced but neither of the search platforms new what it was. Luckily the sites that I did find either gave me a direct answer to my question or a bunch of leading hints to an answer, so I was able to find enough Information to answer my question

Analyze

analyzing my work went pretty smoothly. I cited all my sources that gave me the green light that my information was accurate. And all the texts that I read mostly summarized the same idea of the Squamish nexen plant. What its goal was, why it was dangerous, how it affected the environment and so forth. When words in the text did not make sense, I had to define them, and when I did the text made a lot more sense and I was able to compare one text to another to see if they were similar. using these strategies helped me gain enough information for my questions.

access

I think overall the project could have gone better. I found myself frustrated at some points for even though I found enough information to answer my questions I would have loved to have found more.i think I had this problem because the topic I chose was very specific. it was about a system in Squamish that operated over twenty years ago with one goal. to create pulp. Another reason why I think this was a hard topic to research is that it was a private cite and it was so long ago. That limited me very few pictures and sources. I found myself at some points wondering if I would have information or images. So I think what would help me next time is to choose a subject more focused on the present so I can be more supplied with my sources.

Mitosis and meiosis stop motion project

By Paula, Elodie and Natalie

  1. 1. Was mitosis or meiosis easier to model?

I believe that mitosis was an easier model to work with because there are less steps that we must follow and less specific details, so it was much easier to work with when using the play. A lot of the time our play dough would try up and become crusty so have less to build helped us complete this project faster.

  1. What was the most challenging thing in making your movie?

One of the most challenging parts of this move was staying organized because we had a lot to do at once. We had to make sure our labels were correct, the playdough was making the correct shapes, we were following the right procedures and our camera was in the same angle. There was a lot to think about and to remember throughout the creation of this movie, so I believe staying organised was a difficult task.

  1. What was the easiest thing to do in making your movie?

The easiest thing to do in this movie was editing the photos and forming the stop motion. Once we had taken all the photos and had deleted all the ones that we would not use, it was easy to go on from there and add our photos to cap cut where we would combine and edit them all which was simple for us.

  1. How could you improve your movie?

I believe that me and my group did a great job for this movie but one thing that we could improve would be keeping the same camera angle throughout and being certain that nothing gets in the way of the shots, that way the finished product will appear more organized and cleaner.

  1. Thinking about how you worked with your partner(s), what were some of the challenges andsuccesses of working in a group?

One challenged that we faced was making sure that everyone played a fair role throughout this project and that everybody was contributing in one way or another. I believe we could have succeeded a little better with this if we talked about it more and made sure that everybody was okay with their job and that we all felt helpful. I found our group successful when we all collaborated and shared our ideas and thoughts, that way we could have an input on what everyone thinks so that the project could be the best that we want it.

  1. Why is Mitosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Mitosis?

Mitosis is a way of making more cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. It plays an important role in the development of embryos, and it is important for the growth and development of our bodies as well. Mitosis also produces new cells and replaces cells that are old or damaged.

  1. Why is Meiosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Meiosis?

Meiosis is important because, it ensures that all organisms that are produced by sexual reproduction contain the correct number of chromosomes. It also produces genetic variation by way of process of recombination.

TOKTWD day 2022

For take your kid to work day I went with my dad to his school maillard middle. My dad is a principal and has to wake up early every morning which instantly went under my cons list for this job. However he didn’t want me to spend the whole day in his office with him because he takes care of “private information” so he put me in a French classroom since I’m in French Immersion. I interviewed the French teacher a bit about her job and then I did my own exploring. She said that she loves her job because she loves working with kids. She claims it’ rewarding to be apart of a child’s academic development and journey. She says that it can be challenging at times but loves it none the less. She says you need to go to school after graduation for at least for years with a major and a minor. She majored in French and minored in geology at SFU foe five years. When she told me about the personal attributes that help with job, I wasn’t too sure this was the job for me. she said you need patience, kindness and heart. I have no patience, not for kids, not for strangers, although especially not for kids. As I circulated the room I noticed that I don’t like WORKING with kids. SO despite all the breaks you would get, I don’t think I could be a middle school or elementary school teacher.

Electric house project

intro

This is the define, dream, deliver and debrief process for our electric house problems. Paula, Elodie, Rena and myself all faced many of our own and group problems and frustrations while building this house and its circuits but the one problem we decided to focus on was organizing wires . They were becoming difficult to work with and we new they’d be a problem.

Define

We found it hard to organize wires especially bigger ones with lots of slack. Wires would get tangled and it was hard to follow where the wires connected to. The wires would often be distracting and time consuming to detangle.  We needed to solve this dilemma in an organized way, so we used a 3d printer to create a wire holder. we figured a wire holder would be able to hold more than one wire if we measured big enough.

Dream

We wanted something easy to print so we came up with a design of a square with two long tube like holes inside it. The long wires can loop through  the two tubes as many times as it needs to too shorten and that gets them organized and out of the way. It was the first time using a 3d printer for some of us so at first we were really nervous. That’s why we decided to go with a simpler design since we didn’t want to ruin what we could already do. There was many ideas but we all agreed in the end that this would be the most useful one. Originally, the  holder was supposed to hold all the ends of the wire to the battery.

deliver

Unfortunately, the printer wasn’t working when we needed to print so our holder came late. When it did come, we found that it printed well. However, the tubes were too small to hold all the wires and its clump at the end to the battery. So we decided to use it to organize loose and long wires. The only thing I would have changed is I would have made more holders because we still had lots of wires that needed to be sorted.

Debrief
All in all I think our tinkercad design was a success for the most part. It helped organize wires, however, it is inefficient because you can really only use it for one long wire at a time. If we were able to make more, I’d say we came up with a really useful tool. As for the circuits I think my team did well. We were finished the series circuit in no time, but the parallel circuits took a while longer. we ended making a combination circuit thing with only one switch. When we realized each of the three bulbs needed their own switch we had to restart. So we know for next time to be more organized. With our tools, information and time.
