CC’s Chemistry 11 Midterm Self Assessment and Goal-Setting

During my learning process in Chemistry 11 so far, I have had some strengths and some weaknesses in understanding the contents of the units, which were atomic theory, bonding, and the mole:

Atomic Theory

A strength in atomic theory was that I got a great understanding of how electron orbitals and how their diagrams work; that was one of the things that I most understood. A weakness in atomic theory would be that I had difficulties distinguishing the periodic trends because they were pretty much the same but worked opposite to each other.

Bonding

A strength in bonding, I would say, is my collaboration with others. Knowing that I have covered different types of bonding atoms in the previous year, I was able to demonstrate an amazing role during our whiteboard activity. I was able to explain anything to group members who had some difficulty understanding. I have shown my understanding of the topic and could explain to others my knowledge that I’ve gained from the previous year and during our lessons in class this year. A weakness that I had in bonding would be that I faced some difficulties with the shapes of the bonds where I had to figure out the bonding in molecules and draw the 3D shape of the molecule, which we also got a lab for, and I did terrible at the first try, then the teacher gave us time to improve where I had worked my best to develop, and on the second try, I did so much better, but it was much more difficult than I expected.

The Mole

A strength in this unit would be my communication skills. During this unit, I was lacking understanding of the unit, so I’ve decided to use my communication skills to reach out to the teacher and a couple of friends to help me understand and learn the topic. I asked the teacher, and I keep asking my friends for any help I’m wanting. A weakness in this unit is, to be fair with myself, the whole thing is literally my obstacles I don’t really know what I’m doing; this unit is the weakest of all, and I think it will be. I’m trying my best to gain understanding of this unit because the unit test is coming up very soon, and I still don’t know where I fall. Whenever I understand something, we get introduced to something different that messes up my mind, and I’m left confused with myself to work out where I fall because then only I could start preparing for the test. I hope I’ll get there really soon.

Goal Reflection

What goals have I met and how did I accomplish this and what goals I am still working towards and how will I update my strategies to make this goal more obtainable?

My goals were:

  • A) Take the lead and be confident in myself to step up
  • B) Ask questions right away and not leave them overnight, because I end up not asking them.

I have accomplished goal B which is asking questions right away because I would have been uncertain about some concepts then I would just leave them overnight and expect me to ask them the day after which was really unhelpful for me, therefore I have started to ask the question that comes to my mind on the same minute the teacher is teaching which helps me to understand the concepts of units then I understood that facing something right away is much more beneficial than leaving it to cool down. Goal A I’m still working on it and hoping to be more confident in myself to accept that sometimes it’s okay to make mistakes and not be feeling down because what could make me improve is learning from mistakes and putting myself out there. Making mistakes to improve is better the hiding myself from taking the lead. To make this goal more obtainable I think I would be studying with a big group of friends which could be helpful if I take the lead in solving concepts where if I happen to make mistakes they correct me and that’s a process of learning and developing. I think I’m make a thoughtful approach to my learning journey. By continuing to embrace challenges, learning from mistakes, and collaborating with others.
