This is an example of the devastation of an earthquake. This giant tear was most likely made by an S-wave, which is one of the two types of body waves that a earthquake creates. These waves are slower the P-waves, which is why they are called secondary waves, but are also the most destructive of the two. That is why I think this crack in the ground was caused by a S-wave.
