A fresh look at the periodic table

For this science project we had to reorganize the periodic table with patterns. The first and most obvious pattern is the alphabetical pattern. Another pattern is strongest reacting to the least reacting element. The table is also formed from top which is most reacting and goes down to the least reacting element. We separated the metals and non-metals making it more visual. We identified the colors at the bottom of the table making it clear how our periodic table works. Another thing is that this is also based by their atomic numbers which starts with the largest atomic number to the smallest atomic number going down the collum.

Define:

The challenge I was given was to take apart the periodic table and reorganize it with my own patterns.

Dream:

What information does the periodic table tell you?

One pattern is as go down each family of the periodic table the atomic mass gets larger. There is also a separation between the metals and non-metals.

How could you arrange it differently based on its chemical and physical properties?

One way would be to arrange them based on the ionic compounds so that would make it easier to know which ones would become stable.

What different shapes and colors could be used?

There are so many shapes to choose from, it doesn’t really matter. You can use more or less colors to make your project understandable.

Deliver:

My partner and I started to brainstorm ideas on how to make the periodic table and we drew and cut it up then post it on edublogs so our teacher could see it.

Debrief:

How could we improve our plans?

I think that the alphabetic pattern was very big which made it hard to find other patterns while still incorporating the alphabetical pattern.
