Thoughts on Data Analysis 2017

I believe that statistics have a big role in today’s society. They give us valuable information on everyday things, they provide important results to research projects but, they can also mislead and sway people by giving out false information about important subjects. After reading the article I have learned a lot about statistics and how important they are in our world. They are very helpful to people everywhere wanting to know the opinions of others or facts that are happening around the world. Something new that I learned from the article was the fact that some statistics can be true, but misleading because of the choice of wording in the results. Even though statistics can be very helpful, they can cause different types of problems, like that example. Other problems that statistics can cause is false information from the survey conducted. They can have unfair survey questions that cause you to not express your real opinion and also can use bad sampling to find their information which means that the information collected wasn’t from a diverse group of people.

11.1 Factors Influencing Data Collection Blogpost

First question “Should there be Sunday shopping (in retail businesses not now permitted to be open on Sunday)?”

Second question “If there is to be Sunday shopping (in retail businesses not now permitted to be open on Sunday), should it be on every Sunday or on only the six Sundays immediately before Christmas?”

When I first read the questions from the survey, I thought that they were a bit difficult to read because of the choice of wording in both of the questions. I also thought that they were very similar in the sense that they could have just been combined into one question. After learning about influencing factors, I now think that one of the biggest influence factor in this survey was the use of language. The question wasn’t presented in a way that was 100% clear, so some people who didn’t learn English as their first language might feel confused after reading the question. In the future, when reading and interpreting survey data I will make sure that I understand the question completely before answering so that my given opinion isn’t different from my real opinion.

how to create a budget activity – math 9

List three things you spend money on each month that would be fixed expenses.

  1. Rent/Mortgage for your house
  2. Insurance (ex. Car insurance)
  3. Utilities (ex. Electricity, water, etc)

List three things you spend money on each month that would be variable expenses.

  1. Food
  2. Clothing
  3. Recreational/Leisure activities

If you needed to save some money, how could you change your spending?

You could change your spending by altering your budget. You could review your spendings per month and limit some variable expenses (i.e. Not going shopping every weekend) so that you can save more money for whatever you may need it for.

How much money could you save in a month without giving up too much?

You could decide that you will save a small percentage of your monthly salary(incoming money), so that you are saving money while also leaving yourself money for your fixed and variable expenses.

  4. What qualifications do you have for this job in the following areas : training? education? experience? skills and attributes? Training – the store trained her all that she needed to know. Education – GED (high school diploma), some post-secondary courses. Experience – no, but it would’ve been helpful if she had experience in retail. Also helpful if you are familiar with computer systems that the job requires. Skills and attributes – communication/social skills, she is open, honest and friendly, computer skills, organized and has leadership skills

Student Reflection :

Give three reasons why you would like this job :

  1. I am a people person. Since this job requires someone who is very social, I think I would thrive at it. I enjoy communicating and dealing with all people, whether it be colleagues or customers.
  2. I am an quick learner when it comes to computers and technology. I extremely enjoy using technology in my life and I don’t think I would struggle immensely with new systems and programs shown to me.
  3. I would enjoy really enjoy the freedom of being the store’s administrator. You don’t have a strict schedule of everything you have to do that day and as long as you put in your hours and completed everything that needs to be done, you can choose what you want to do.

Give three reasons why you would not like this job :

  1. I don’t think I would enjoy sitting down all day at my computer. Although I do like technology, I feel like I would become very uncomfortable sitting, I would rather have a job where I am actively helping around.
  2. The repetitive checking and completing forms all day would not be a thing I would enjoy if I had this job. I think that I would become disinterested in seeing, checking and completing the same thing multiple times a day
  3. At her superstore, she was the go-to person to do almost everything. I believe that I would become very stressed and worried about having a lot of things on my plate while also trying to complete my daily tasks.

Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I don’t think that this job is for me because I don’t think I would like a job sitting at a desk for most of my day. Also, I have other interests when it comes to what I want to be when I’m older, something that either involves helping kids or adults or journalism and writing/reporting. Although, I really enjoyed seeing an inside look of her job, I don’t think that I will suit this job.

Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary plans? (education, training, travel, work)

img_0141

Part of her job calls for her to update the huddle boards (the info boards for all the superstore employees) She was posting a slideshow of everyone’s halloween costumes

I think that this experience was a wonderful opportunity to see and experience things that I’ve never seen before. Personally, as I said in the previous question, I don’t think that I would suit this job, therefore I think that this experience has pushed me to get good post secondary education and/or training so I have more choices on what I want to do and not only have this job or a similar one as an only choice.

what i learned this week – exponent laws

the week of oct 24th, 2016:

The skill that we focused on the most this week is learning exponent laws

challenges and achievements:

I didn’t know any of the laws before the lessons, so the concept was new to me. I found that the laws were not very complicated and were easy to learn and follow along with. While doing the homework, I noticed that I had memorized every almost every exponent law/rule

visual: some of the exponent laws that I learned this week

rule : when multiplying powers with the same base, you add the exponents

explanation : when you are multiplying powers with the same base, you add all the exponents together to give you a sum which will be the new exponent for the one base

3^2\cdot3^4 =3^{2+4}

= 3^6

___________________________________________________________

rule : when the exponent of a power is zero, the value of the power is one (as long as the base is not zero)

explanation : when your power has an exponent of 0, the value of the equation is 1. The only time that this rule doesn’t work is when the base is zero.

4^3\div4^3

= 4^{3-3}

= 4^0=1

___________________________________________________________

rule : when a product is raised to an exponent, you can rewrite each number in the product with the same exponent

explanation : when you have a product and it is raised to an exponent, you simply rewrite each number that the product contains with the same exponent

(3\cdot2)^2

= (3\cdot2)(3\cdot2)

= 3^2\cdot2^2

___________________________________________________________

rule : to raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents

explanation : when you have to raise a power to a power, you take the two exponents and multiply them and then you use that protect as the new exponent to your base

(2^4)^5

= (2^4)(2^4)(2^4)(2^4)(2^4)

= 2^{4+4+4+4+4}

= 2^{20}
