Inside the Nucleus- Edible DNA Model

1A) How are DNA, Chromosomes, and Genes related?

Chromosomes are made of DNA, and genes are sections of DNA.

1B) How are DNA, Chromosomes, and Genes different?

A chromosome is a structure that is made of DNA and protein. Chromosomes are found in the nucleus of cells and chromosomes contain genes.

2) What does each item represent?

-Black licorice/Red licorice: Back bone (Sugar Phosphate)

-Toothpicks:

-Marshmallows: Bases

  •  Pink- Cytosine (C)
  • Yellow- Adenine (A)
  • Green- Guanine (G)
  • Orange- Thymine (T)

3) What I learned…

This activity has taught me about the DNA base sequences. The bases A and T are always together and the bases C and G are always together. The marshmallows made it easier to understand when we used the colour schemes to identify which pairs of bases match.
