Sgrafitto Tile Product Final
Butterfly Cat Tile
Month of May
Milana Veljacic + Alexa Walter
HOW DIFFICULT DID I FIND THIS PROJECT?
I didn’t find this project super difficult, once Alexa and I figured out our designs and colors the hardest part was waiting for them to go in the kiln.
WHAT DID I LEARN THE MOST ABOUT DURING THIS PROCESS?
I learned that you need to have more of a light hand depending on how clear you want the design to be. You can’t press too hard otherwise the line is too thick and not too light otherwise the line doesn’t show up.
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY IF I DID THIS PROJECT AGAIN?
I would probably use a different color because I was invisioning it being lighter.
Sgraffito Tile Process
Here is my sgraffito tile process over the span of a week. I first helped make clay tiles for my friends and then I mixed both types of clay when I made mine to create a marbled look. The color choice isn’t my favorite, I was hoping it would turn out lighter, but in general I am happy with how it turned out. It only took me a week to finish my entire tile so I only have one edublog post.
Sgraffito Tile Purpose
I decided to do my sgraffito tile with Alexa. We combined our own ideas and designs to create our collaborative tile. I wanted to do a butterfly while alexa wanted to do a cat. The connection of our tiles will be the butterflys tail and the cats tail.
*Clearly this sketchbook is not 4 by 4 so neither is the sketch
(As soon as I get a 4 by 4 paper and my partner is back we will redo the drawing to make it the right size.)
Monster Mug Final Project
Muggy Cow

Milana Veljacic
HOW DIFFICULT DID I FIND THIS PROJECT:
I found this project reasonably difficult. It took me a bit to figure out how I wanted the cow print to be and look but im overal happy with how the spots turned out.
WHAT DID I LEARN MOST ABOUT DURING THIS PROCESS:
I learned and practiced scoring and shaping the clay to what I had invisioned prior. I also found out that this was harder than it looked! I learned about all the steps to getting to the final product of a designed mug.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY IF YOU HAD THIS PROJECT AGAIN:
If I had this project again I would re paint over the white underglaze a second time because parts of it were see through. I also would double check what colors I was using because the red in my mug was supposed to be pink.
Monster Mug Process
Here are photos of my monster mug process. These were taken on a video the last day before spring break but I screenshoted pictures from the video to attach them here. There is no color yet, so far just the clay part was finished and ready for color when we came back from break. I did this over the span of two classes but unfortunetly can’t locate the first day pictures.
The Veldt Blackout Poem- English Honours 9
I chose the theme of abandonment. I felt a bit lost at the beginning of my poem, I wasn’t sure where to start, how to start, or what to touch upon. As soon as I saw the words “I lie” on my chosen page I needed to incorporate it. It immediately reminded me of afterschool when parents make conversation in asking about our days and how ninety-five percent of kids respond with “fine”. Any kid could have the most horrible day imaginable and still answer with “fine”. It is a lie. “Struggling on my own” I feel is pretty self-explanatory- using my example; The child feeling alone and not wanting to talk with their parents leads to them going on electronics. We’ve started naturally gravitating to our phones in uncomfortable situations. The parents end up leaving them on their electronics not wanting to create an argument and that’s how the disconnect starts. It is a reoccurring cycle with no end in sight. My poetic devices were alliteration “strayed” and repetition “I”. The word strayed represents the kid being a stray, he or she is alone, they are isolated being on technology instead of creating real human connections. I truly feel that this poem chose me, it just came together after getting started and I found my voice and opinion through the words in the book.
Indigenous Exploration
Here is my group podcast on Residential schools on Indigenous people in Canada.
Reflection on my experience working on this project. Critical thinking. How does my artifact tie in with what I have learned before? How has my thinking change? What made it change?
My artifact ties into what I have learned before because I had, along with the majority of students, already learned a touch on Residential schools before. I got to use that to my advantage of find other new things I hadn’t known about yet to better educate my listeners and myself on what happened. My thinking has stayed relatively the same, I just have more knowledge about what it was like back then and more of their experiences. Learning more about the Indignous people that made it through and survived really opened my eyes to Canada’s history and how badly some were unfortunetly treated.
