1984 Politics

The Political Spectrum is classified as a way to define different political positions with the use of four quadrants. The right and left wing politics are presented in the horizontal line. The right side is associated with conservative views, to limit change and instill traditional values. Being on the far right side would show an extreme nationalist viewpoint, such as fascism. Meanwhile the left wing supports progressive reforms and equality. However the far left is considered more extreme, revolutionary thinking, such as communism. The vertical line is where the libertarian and authoritarian concepts are defined. The bottom half of the axis depicts libertarianism or the belief that personal freedom should be prevalent. The top half is authoritarianism or the belief that authority should be constantly followed. To summarize, a political spectrum shows each quadrant’s relation to one another.  In 1984, the government is known as Ingsoc or the English Socialist Party. My guess is that Ingsoc falls under the “red quadrant” as it includes socialist and authoritarian principles. However I do believe that this government should be classified closer to the vertical axis, or near the blue. Ingsoc may be classified as fascism or socialism; combining the two principles in their governing tactic.

Articles about the Cobots and Man-Machine synergy | DigiconAsia

On October 26th, 2022, a man named Gerald Schultz from Ohio, built a time machine and unintentionally changed the world as we know it.

The Coronavirus, or COVID-19 was a global pandemic that occured in 2020, yet the first case of this catastrophic virus was in late 2019.

While Schultz was experiencing a quarantine along with the rest of the world, he started tinkering with the idea of building a time machine.

Little did he know that his little home project that he begun out of boredom would change the trajectory of the world.

After his successful trip going back in time, Schultz decided that he would slaughter a singular bat that he found while exploring ancient rome.

After he returned back to the current day, it was uncovered that the eradication of this single bat, made it so that the coronavirus pandemic would never spread and bats would have gone extinct by the year 1912.

This phenomenon is called the butterfly effect.

Now, our society has completely shifted.

The Covid-19 pandemic is now a forgotten moment in history and many problems have diminished.

Inflation is nowhere near as bad as it was, among other things. Monthly inflation rate U.S. 2022 | Statista

In turn, homelessness cases are way lower and many people are not struggling nearly as much with financial security.

Public Broadcasting Introduction

CBC Logo, symbol, meaning, history, PNG

Public broadcasting is a multimedia platform that consist of radio, television and other media platforms. Funding for public broadcasting comes from the government and taxpayer money. Canada’s public broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), provides free services such as sports streaming, music, and news. The CBC also curates to minorities and people in rural areas. Programs directed to minority communities are easy to make on public broadcasting services, because they aren’t searching for high views, like a private broadcaster. However, some may not agree with the CBC as 400 million dollars worth of funding comes from advertisers, which can potentially lead to bias towards these corporations. Overall, public broadcasting is extremely appealing to the general public as its services unite our nation and is adaptive to the demographic of the country.

Indigenous Podcast – Stories From Survivors

For our podcast we decided to share a story of a residential school survivor. The residential school survivor that we chose to make this podcast about is Sam George. Sam George is from British Columbia, and he attended St Paul’s Indian Residential school. Today, we will be be discussing his experience throughout the residential school system. We discuss his life during residential school, after he left, and at this current point. To make our podcast, we decided to use the app iMovie to record and edit. Then we used the Blue Snowball microphones provided by Vancity to ensure the best sound quality for our podcast. The music featured in our podcast, is sourced the free music from the site www.bensound.com, we used “Tomorrow” by Benjamin Tissot. After we finished putting it together, we realized how important it is to share George’s story. His story is just one of many survivors that went through this system. It was a great to get to know his story, and we learned a lot in the process. Not only learning about what he went through, but also to understand and empathize with the countless other indigenous people that went through what Sam George did.

Sugar Falls Word Cloud

The 19 words I have chosen summarize a myriad of things that happened or relate to the graphic novel, “Sugar Falls”. The story retells a true story about a woman who was taken to a residential school. She shares her experience and opens up about her trauma regarding abuse, assault, and the death of her friend. The novel encapsulates the fear and sadness surrounding residential schools had to go through.

Speculative Fiction – Dystopia

The short film I have chosen is entitled “Being Pretty”. This somewhat frightening film discusses a world in which if one is not conventionally “pretty” they are killed. Children watch a public service announcement about how their parents, who clean, feed, and provide for them, are pretty. Someday, the children will grow up to be like their parents; pretty. However, they could also become uglies. These so-called uglies are being labelled as fat, blind, gay, etc, and who are also being killed. The film is a form of speculative fiction as it questions the “what ifs” of our society. It also deals with controversial topics such as being outside of a societal norm which some people find problematic. Furthermore, it is a mix of genres, although it is principally dystopia. The reason being, “a dystopia is an imagined community or society that is dehumanizing and frightening. A dystopia is an antonym of a utopia, which is a perfect society” (What is Dystopia, 2021)
