Indigenous Podcast – Stories From Survivors

For our podcast we decided to share a story of a residential school survivor. The residential school survivor that we chose to make this podcast about is Sam George. Sam George is from British Columbia, and he attended St Paul’s Indian Residential school. Today, we will be be discussing his experience throughout the residential school system. We discuss his life during residential school, after he left, and at this current point. To make our podcast, we decided to use the app iMovie to record and edit. Then we used the Blue Snowball microphones provided by Vancity to ensure the best sound quality for our podcast. The music featured in our podcast, is sourced the free music from the site www.bensound.com, we used “Tomorrow” by Benjamin Tissot. After we finished putting it together, we realized how important it is to share George’s story. His story is just one of many survivors that went through this system. It was a great to get to know his story, and we learned a lot in the process. Not only learning about what he went through, but also to understand and empathize with the countless other indigenous people that went through what Sam George did.

Sugar Falls Word Cloud

The 19 words I have chosen summarize a myriad of things that happened or relate to the graphic novel, “Sugar Falls”. The story retells a true story about a woman who was taken to a residential school. She shares her experience and opens up about her trauma regarding abuse, assault, and the death of her friend. The novel encapsulates the fear and sadness surrounding residential schools had to go through.

Speculative Fiction – Dystopia

The short film I have chosen is entitled “Being Pretty”. This somewhat frightening film discusses a world in which if one is not conventionally “pretty” they are killed. Children watch a public service announcement about how their parents, who clean, feed, and provide for them, are pretty. Someday, the children will grow up to be like their parents; pretty. However, they could also become uglies. These so-called uglies are being labelled as fat, blind, gay, etc, and who are also being killed. The film is a form of speculative fiction as it questions the “what ifs” of our society. It also deals with controversial topics such as being outside of a societal norm which some people find problematic. Furthermore, it is a mix of genres, although it is principally dystopia. The reason being, “a dystopia is an imagined community or society that is dehumanizing and frightening. A dystopia is an antonym of a utopia, which is a perfect society” (What is Dystopia, 2021)
