Fire chief Beatty believes that technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure are the major causes for the current state of the society and that the destruction of books helps society into this ideal social order where only important knowledge is taught and full equality with no conflict is achieved. Beatty affirms his opinion through the passage: “We must all be alike…everyone made equal. Each man has an image of every other; then they are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against. So! A book is a loaded gun in the house next door. Burn it.” (page 56) Books in Beatty’s opinion are the equivalent of a weapon. That they exist for the sole purpose of destruction and conflict within a society. You could also infer that Beatty finds some types of knowledge to be some sort of weapon as well. He believes that only crucial knowledge should be taught and that the things taught through literature are just an initiator for conflict between the population. That if everyone is taught the exact same things, the population would be much happier as there would be no one smarter or better than another person. This equality within society is something Beatty considers to be very crucial for a good social order. These are all major parts within the ideology of Beatty towards a strong and a good social order. Therefore, the destruction of books are considered as something positive to Beatty as well as technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure in leading society into the best form and way of live as possible.
