I think that one can build resilience in face of extreme discrimination of race or sex in many ways. First of all, one must be able to stand up for themselves and not be afraid to fight for their rights. Everyone is entitled to their own rights but when letting someone walk all over you and convince you that you have no rights, that is one way to never obtain resilience. One must never back down and stop fighting for what they deserve, when one has confidence in their rights and themselves, resilience can be achieved. Don’t let fear take over your mentality, fight against fear to obtain greater things. Another way to build resilience is to surround yourself with your family and friends who support you and can build you back up in the most desperate of times. With people at your side, anything seems obtainable. Some questions that can be inquired from this main one is, how can one continue to fight when they feel as though they have already lost? How can one never give up? How can one know when something is obtainable or not? How does one know when they are needed to back down if things get out of control? A book that I read that touches upon the subject of resilience and racial discrimination was called Les Larmes Noires by Julius Lester. This book was really inspiring because it takes place back when black people were still slaves and it follows a young girl who was separated from her family trying to fight for her rights and escape from this tragic lifestyle. This book touches on the subject of resilience because it shows the willpower that people have to fight for a better lifestyle despite facing such extreme discrimination.
Well written and insightful, Maya. I think I should read this book.
