Questions:

  1. How does Ben make Willy feel about himself? What qualities in Ben does Willy want for himself? For his sons? (p. 35)

Ben is like a role model for Willy, someone to look up to, and a reminder of what Willy could have had if he had gone to Alaska. Willy wanted his sons to be successful as well and to have fortunes. Willy’s American dream was to have money and a job, and that’s what Ben has.

  1. Biff tells Linda to “stop making excuses” for Willy. How does she defend Willy? Is she really making excuses for him? Explain. (p. 41)

She knows he is not a great man, but Linda will adore Willy for no matter what, and the reason that Biff tells Linda to make excuses for him is because he will never show any signs of respect for Linda. “He’s not the finest character that ever lived, but he is a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid”

  1. Why is Willy so confident that Happy and Biff’s business plan will work? (p. 48) Why does Willy himself need their plan to work?

Willy is confident that their business is gonna work, because he has so much confidence in them because he admires them so much. Willy relies on both kids, as he has just gotten fired and needs the money as well.

“I see great things for you kids, I think your troubles are over. But remember, start big and you’ll end big”

Problem Situation

English 11

John and Emily are high school students who want to get good grades, maintain active social lives, and participate in sports. John is a linebacker on the football team, and Emily is a defender on the soccer team. Their busy lives prevent them from spending much time on their homework, and they both have been averaging Cs with an occasional D on their work in English class. The end of the semester is drawing near, and a major final project and test are looming. They both think they will pull off at least a B in the course by doing well on these final activities. However, both the football and soccer teams have qualified for post-season games, and both John and Emily are on the decorating committee for a major end-of-year dance which they will attend. Secretly they both want to be selected as King and Queen for the dance, so they have been spending extra time socializing with other students after practice in the evenings.

QUESTIONS FOR RESPONSE:

1. Do you think that John and Emily are deceiving themselves about being able to do well in their English class?

Yes they are, because they are very busy with their extracurricular activities and they won’t make in it time for school and work on their projects so as a result they cant improve their marks. They should prioritize school over anything, as education is one of the most important things in life.

2. What do you think might be the result of the schedule they are following?

With the schedule that they’re following, I don’t think that they will be able to improve their marks because they are paying too much attention to their dance committee and their extra activities that it will prevent them from receiving a B in English class. If they really want to do better, they should try talking to their teachers so that they can find a way to do good in their classes in a way that won’t affect their extracurricular activities.

3. If they don’t do well on their English work, will they blame others or themselves?

I would guess that they would blame others instead of actually taking responsibility for their actions. As humans, we tend to blame our errors on others, instead of actually thinking straight and recognizing our own faults

4. What, if anything, might you do differently if you were in their place?

If I were in their place, I would try talking to my teachers and finding a way that I can do good in my class and that doesn’t affect my extracurricular activities or my social life.

The American Dream

The American dream.
We all have a dream, a yearning, but every dream requires a sacrifice. Or a hope. A reason to live. We all fight for a dream, but an immigrant fights for the American Dream.
Many Latinos immigrate to Canada or the United States for a chance at a better life, or to help their families back in their country of origin. Our countries are mostly harmed by crisis, economic problems and delinquency. Some Latinos immigrate because of the gangs in our countries, and many die because of these gangs. They kill innocent people. We’re not safe in our countries, and that is why we immigrate to safer places in search for help.
The life of an immigrant isn’t an easy one. We sometimes struggle with a lot of discrimination, it’s harder for us to find good jobs, but at least we can also show that we struggle and yet we are capable of getting ahead. Many immigrants come to the United States or Canada, to have a better life, without knowing what life is like in the North. The way I see it, the American Dream is an ideal or belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where the having a better job, education, and safety is possible for everyone. The American Dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work, rather than by chance.
