Expanding Universe Lab

In this lab we tried to visualize the way that galaxies move farther and farther away from each other. We used a balloon which represents the universe and on that balloon we put dots which represented different galaxies. We measured the distance between the dots at different stages which were when the balloon was partially filled, half filled, and fully filled. In our chart ABC had a trend which was they were all under 3. D and E were a little off from the others but those two had a trend themselves, which was that they were between 5 and 7. I enjoyed this activity because we were able to actually see how galaxies move. It helped me understand this theory more, because when we were talking about it before it was a little confusing. Can the universe stop growing? What would happen if galaxies collided?

DNA Ladder

How are chromosomes, DNA, and genes related to one another?

Chromosomes contain the DNA inside of them, and inside of DNA is genetic code which are genes.

Explain what these following candies represent: red licorice, black licorice, marshmallows (yellow, orange, pink, green), toothpicks

The red licorice represents the sugar backbone, and the black licorice represents the phosphate back bone. The marshmallows represents the genetic code, yellow was Adenine, orange was Thymine, pink was Cytosine, and green was Guanine. The toothpicks represent the bonds between the bases and backbone.

Did this activity  help you understand the structure of DNA? Explain your answer

Yes it did because now I understand the way DNA is structured, and how genetic code is structured. Now it’ll be easier for me to remember that Adenine pairs with Thymine and that Cytosine pairs with Guanine. IMG_8351 IMG_8353 IMG_8356

2 Types of Charge

There are 2 types of charges positive (acetate) and negative (vinyl). An acetate strip carries a positive charge when it gets rubbed with a piece of cotton. Vinyl on the other hand gets a negative charge when its rubbed with wool. If two positively charged items get close together they repel. When two negatively objects get close together they also repel. If you put a positively charged item close to a negatively charged item they attract. When you put a neutral object close to a positive/negatively charged  object, the neutral object attracts the charged object.
