Enclosure Notes
- enclosure: the process of combining fields and surrounding them with fences
- enclosure ended the old system forever
- it combined the small strips of fields into large fields and enclosed them with fences
- this meant that farmers could work more efficiently
- enclosure meant that all commons(the land that everyone used) became private property
- only the better off could pay the fees to use this land
- this meant that poor farmers could not afford to use the land
- they had to sell their land to rich landowners and they took advantage of the opportunity
Farming for Profit Notes
- because of the new development of enclosure, farming became a business
- landowners began to farm to make a profit instead of just having to feed their families
- they now farmed to make money and were willing to invest more money in farming techniques that might make them richer
- they knew to accept the occasional failure and take financial risks if new ways of farming were to be found
- their goal was to make each plot of land produce better results for lower costs
Impact of Agricultural Change/Positive and Negative Effects Notes
- Impact:
- growing population because of food availability-this meant that there were more workers for factories and more cities grew around these
- enclosure ended the old system forever as farm work could be done more efficiently
- commons became private property(the land uses by everybody)-also negative impact as poor farmers could no longer use that land
- because of enclosure-farming became a business
- the new technologies made farming more efficient and successful
- the crop rotation increased crops
- the fodder he fed to his animals increased his herds
- corn contributed to livestock population
- potatoes contributed to human population
- the livestock changes and the realization in breeds increased profits
- trade relationships were made that impacted profits as new food and products arrived
- Positive:
- farms were now more productive in Britain than they have ever been
- fewer farmers were needed to feed larger city populations
- because smaller farmers sold their land, the city gained more workers
- changed the look of the countryside, it helped create and support the Industrial Revolution
- Negative:
- the changes were easier for the wealthy farmers
- small farmers were caught in a money crunch-unable to afford new and better animals and plants, so they were less able to compete against richer farmers
- many smaller farmers sold their land and looked for work in the city
- coal mines had a great risk of collapsing or having a gas explosion, not a safe method of working
